Women's Soccer Blanks Mississippi University for Women, 3-0, at Home on Tuesday

Shreveport – The Centenary women's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak and recorded another shutout as the Ladies blanked the Mississippi University for Women Owls, 3-0, on Tuesday evening in a non-conference match at Mayo Field.

The Ladies (6-0) remained undefeated on the season and posted their fifth -straight shutout, which is now tied for second-most for a single season in program history in the division III (2011-present) era. Centenary, which defeated Austin College 1-0 on Saturday night in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest at home, has now outscored its opponents 16-1 this season. The record for shutouts in a single season in the D3 era is seven.

Centenary defeated the Owls (1-9) for the second time this season after picking up a 4-0 win on Feb. 22 in Columbus, Miss. The Ladies have now won 22 of their last 25 matches dating back to the beginning of last season and are 12-1 in their last 13 home matches. Centenary improved to 4-0 at home this season and 4-0 in non-conference play, and the Ladies have also won 13 consecutive out of conference matches, having not lost since the 2017 season.

The Ladies dominated the Owls, finishing with a 28-4 advantage in shots, including a 14-0 edge in the first half alone. Senior Pamela Fonseca (Houston, Texas) scored her second goal of the season at the 17:24 mark of the first half to give Centenary a 1-0 lead which the Ladies would take into halftime.

Centenary wasted no time in scoring its second goal of the game as freshman Alexa Hinojosa (Pasadena, Texas) was fouled hard making a run to the goal and was given a penalty kick opportunity which she converted on for the 2-0 lead. The goal was the first for Hinojosa and the fourth by a freshman this season.

Junior Gabby McDonald (Pasadena, Texas) scored the third and final goal for the Ladies as she took advantage when Owls' keeper Sarah Gilliland strayed several yards in front of the goal and as the two met for a possible collision or block by Gilliland, McDonald used her skill to rifle the ball around her and curve it into the back of the net on a beautiful score.

McDonald, who scored Centenary's lone goal on Saturday in the win over Austin College, now leads the Ladies with three goals on the season, as she is tied with sophomore forward Avery Gilbert (League City, Texas). She now owns five career goals.

Senior goalkeeper Maggie Pitcher (San Antonio, Texas) recorded her fifth shutout of the season and the 11th of her career. She had set a new division III program era record for shutouts in a career with Saturday's 1-0 win. Pitcher, named the SCAC Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week on March 1, had two saves on Tuesday and now has 21 saves for the season. Pitcher has an impressive .955 save percentage for the season and entered the game leading the conference in saves. She entered Tuesday's play in a tie for second place in the country in shutouts, 13th in save percentage, 15th in goals against average, and 21st in saves.

The Ladies return to SCAC play this weekend as they square off with the University of Dallas on Saturday, March 13 at 3:30 p.m. and then face Schreiner (March 20) at 2 p.m. in consecutive weeks at home.
