Ladies Set To Face Austin College On Saturday In Home Finale

Shreveport- The Centenary men's and women's swimming teams will face the Austin College 'Roos on Saturday in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference dual meet in their home finale at the Centenary Fitness Center.

The meet was originally scheduled for Jan. 22 and was going to serve as Centenary's annual Senior Day but was postponed due to COVID-19 health and safety concerns. The Ladies and Gents however decided to make the most of that disappointing cancellation and celebrated their seniors with a special intrasquad meet.

Centenary and Austin College are facing each other for the second time in two weeks as the Ladies and Gents combined to record nine individual victories on Jan. 15 in the Austin College Invitational against the host 'Roos and University of the Ozarks in Sherman, Texas in their most recent action. The Ladies finished second with 491 points while the Gents placed third with 286 points.

The Ladies claimed six individual wins in that Jan. 15 meet at Austin College led by two each from senior Brianna Serret (Alexandria, La.) and freshman Madeline Vacula (Belton, Texas). Both Serret and Vacula were also part of the Ladies' 200 medley and 200 free relay team that each placed second. Senior Madelyn Frederick (Slidell, La.) and junior Christine Goodman (Alexandria, La.) teamed with them on the 200 medley relay team that swam a time of 2:02.65. Frederick and senior Margot Frost (Prairieville, La.) joined Serret and Vacula to swim the 200 free relay in a time of 1:49.41.

Vacula continued her impressive rookie season as she won both the 1650 free and 500 free. She swam season-best times in both events, 18:40.06 in the 1650 and 5:27.85 in the 500. Vacula now has six individual wins and three runner-up finishes this season. She was swimming the 1650 for the first time this season.

Serret won the 100 fly and 200 back on Saturday. She swam the 100 fly in a time of 1:02.33 and the 200 back in a time of 2:15.68. Serret, named the SCAC Women's Swimmer of the Week in November for the second time in her career, now has eight individual wins this season through her first four meets and has earned a pair of runner-up finishes.

Frederick won the 50 free with a time of 27.08 and junior Katie Malicoat (Wichita, Kan.) claimed a victory in the 200 IM (2:31.72). Senior Lindsay Strohm (McKinney, Texas) finished second in the 200 free with a time of 2:11.10 and Frost earned a runner-up finish in the 100 back (1:05.32). Sophomore Bryn Jenkins (Houston, Texas) finished fourth in the 100 back (1:08.72), Strohm placed sixth (1:13.12), and junior Camryn Hebert (Youngsville, La.) finished seventh with a time of 1:15.15. Hebert also finished seventh in the 100 fly (1:12.03).

Goodman earned a runner-up finish in the 100 breast (1:17.36) and Malicoat finished third, swimming a time of 1:17.91. Frederick finished just behind her in fourth place at 1:18.67. Goodman also recorded a second-place finish in the 200 breast (2:48.05).

Sophomore Anacelia Galeano-Balam (Baton Rouge, La.) earned a second-place finish in the 200 fly (2:38.86) and Frost did the same in the 100 free (59.02) while Strohm (1:00.40) and Galeano-Balam (1:05.24) finished fourth and eighth respectively in the 100 free. Jenkins finished third in the 500 free as she swam a time of 6:02.04 for her second-top four finish of the day.

The Ladies and Gents combined to record an impressive 11 individual wins and one team win versus Hendrix on Nov. 13 after a season-high 14 in the season-opening meet at home versus McMurry back on Oct. 30 and now have 34 for the season.

Next up for the Ladies following Saturday's meet is the SCAC Championships set for Feb. 16-19 in Garland, Texas.
