Diamond Gents Fall 12-5 On Saturday In West Coast Trip Opener To Claremont-Mudd-Scripps

Claremont, Calif. – The Centenary baseball team fell 12-5 on Saturday afternoon to the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags in a non-conference contest at Arce Field.

The Diamond Gents (6-5) began their seven-game game west coast road trip by facing the Stags (5-2) for the first time in program history. Centenary, currently receiving votes (7) in the latest D3baseball.com/NCBWA poll, will play La Verne on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. (4:30 p.m. CT) and then the Diamond Gents and Stags will meet again on Monday at 2:30 p.m. (4:30 p.m. CT).

Centenary fell behind 7-0 after three innings but cut its deficit to just three runs twice, but the Stags added four in the seventh to secure the win. The Diamond Gents entered the game riding a hot streak on offense, having scored 44 runs and 42 hits in a four-game home series versus Alma College last weekend, but were held to just seven hits on Saturday as their three-game winning streak was snapped.

The Stags pounded out 16 hits against eight Centenary pitchers. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps batters drew six walks and hit three home runs, two doubles, and stole four bases. The Diamond Gents drew four walks and only struck out five times, but left seven on base. The Stags left nine on base and committed three errors.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps used four pitchers as starter Ryan Warm (1-0) got the win as he went six innings and allowed four runs, three earned, and six hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Warm threw 90 pitches, 57 for strikes, and faced 26 batters. Junior RHP Christian Diaz (Houston, Texas) made his team-high fourth start of the season for the Diamond Gents and took the loss as he fell to 0-3. He lasted just 1.1 innings after allowing four runs, all earned, on four hits with a walk and no strikeouts. He threw 37 pitches (24 strikes) and faced nine batters. Junior RHP Peyton Thibodeaux (Lake Arthur, La.) relieved Diaz and went 1.2 innings and allowed three runs, all earned, and allowed five hits including a pair of home runs. He did not walk or strike out a batter. Thibodeaux threw 32 pitches, 24 strikes, and faced 11 batters.

The next six Centenary relievers- freshman RHP Trevor Henry (Bossier City, La.), sophomore LHP Jacob Colby (Kingwood, Texas), junior RHP Hank Bennett (Richmond, Texas), junior LHP Collier Cloinger (Bossier City, La.), junior RHP Jacob Lievre (Katy, Texas), and senior Tyler Welch (Lake Charles, La.) combined to hold the Stags to just five earned runs and seven hits in five innings with a pair of strikeouts.

Senior 1B Preston Ludwick (Pflugerville, Texas) led the way on offense for Centenary with three hits and senior CF Gary Hewitt (Cedar Park, Texas) had two and scored two runs. Ludwick was 3-4 with an RBI single, a double and a walk. Six Stags recorded multi-hit games led by DH Julian Sanders' game-high four hits.
