Shreveport - The Centenary football team will face the John Melvin University Millers on Saturday night in a contest set for 6 p.m. at Rodney Duron Field on the campus of Evangel Christian Academy. 

The Gents will be playing their second of three-straight home games after crushing the Louisiana Community Christian squad 79-6 last Saturday. Centenary will face the Haywood Crusaders on Sept. 30 at 1 p.m. to wrap up the homestand.

John Melvin, located in Crowley, is in its first season under head coach Don Lee. The Millers have scrimmaged Texas Wesleyan and also played Louisiana Community Christian earlier this month and led 41-0 at halftime before inclement weather cancelled the remainder of the game. John Melvin is in the midst of the accreditation process and once that is complete they will join the Red River Conference as an NAIA school. 

"The focus this season is to master the fundamentals and play as a team," said Centenary head coach Byron Dawson. Although we started off slow in the first few minutes of the game last week against LCC, we quickly found our groove and responded."

"Freshman RB Cedrick Allison (Oakdale, La.) did a good job running the ball and freshman WR Devin Ardoin (Mamou, La.) was a reliable target at wide receiver. The Defense applied pressure – freshman DB Bryan Washington (Wylie, Texas) had a pick and freshman DB Brandon Heard (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) had a pick six. Overall, it was a good night for all three phases of the team." 

"We have several things that we must get cleaned up heading into the John Melvin game. They have good size and a lot of speed. They are also a very well-coached team that has a large roster. We must have a good week of preparation and we must be prepared to be our best on Saturday." 

The Haughton High School Color Guard will be on hand for pregame ceremonies on Saturday and Dr. Cory Wikan, Dean of Centenary's Hurley School of Music, will perform the National Anthem.
