Men's Golf Second Heading Into Final Round of Hal Sutton Invitational

Bossier City, La. - The Centenary men's and women's golf teams completed day one at the annual Hal Sutton Invitational on Monday at the Golf Club at Stonebridge as the Gents are in second place and the Ladies in sixth after the opening 18 holes.

The men played a par-72 layout with a yardage of 6,851 while the women also played a par-72 layout with a yardage of 5,814. The final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday with an 8:15 a.m. scheduled shotgun start. 

The Gents shot a 4-over par 292 led by a solid 2-under par round of 70 by senior Brodey Warner (Brookeland, Texas). Sophomore Richard Polan (Brno, Czech Republic) shot a 1-under 71 and freshman Riley Chase (Crosby, Texas) shot a 1-over 73. Warner is in a tie for second place with Blinn College's Riley Simmons, Polan is fourth, and Chase is tied for seventh with three others. Senior Harrison John (Lafayette, La.) shot a 6-over par 78 and freshman Ricky Blair (Bossier City, La.) turned in a 12-over par 84.

Both the Ladies and Gents finished fifth in the Pinecrest Invitational hosted by LeTourneau University on March 9 in Longview, Texas in their most recent action. The Ladies, playing in their first tournament of the season, shot a +274 over par 850 while the Gents, playing in their second tournament and first since early February, finished at +48 (900).

Polan highlighted the tournament for Centenary as he tied for the individual lead after Tuesday's final round and then lost to Houston-Victoria's Max Schliesing in a five-hole playoff for the individual title. Polan shot 68-73-72 – 213 (even par) for the two-day event which included the new career-low round of 68 in round one and was subsequently named the SCAC Men's Golfer of the Week the following day for the first time in his young career.

Blinn College's "A" squad is the leader on the men's side entering Tuesday's final round after shooting a 3-under par 285. Centenary is seven shots back of the Buccaneers and Tyler Junior College is third at 14-over par 302. East Texas Baptist is fourth at 17-over 305 and LeTourneau University is one shot back of ETBU at 18-over par 306.

Blinn College's "B" team is sixth (24-over 312), Williams Baptist seventh (29-over 317), Louisiana College is eighth (34-over 322), and Jacksonville College is ninth after shooting a 70-over par 358. Travis Edwards of Blinn is the top individual after shooting a 3-under par 69. His teammate Riley Simmons is tied with Warner in second place at 2-under 70. Senior Gage Garber (Coppell, Texas) and sophomore Devan Martin (Watson, La.) played as individuals on Monday as Garber shot a 15-over par 87 and Martin carded a 19-over 91.

The Ladies shot a 134-over par 422 on Monday and were led by a 14-over par 86 from junior Abigail Hayes (Plano, Texas). Senior Shannon Orlopp (Rogers, Ark.) shot a 22-over par 94, freshman Madison Wing (Shreveport) shot a 45-over 117, and junior Lindsay Strohm (McKinney, Texas) shot a 53-over 125.

Tyler Junior College is the current women's leader at 33-over par 321. ETBU is nine shots back (+42 – 330), Williams Baptist is third after shooting a 59-over 347, and LeTourneau (60-over 348) and Blinn (62-over 250) are fourth and fifth respectively. Marie Larretche of Tyler shot an even-par 72 to take the individual lead into Tuesday's final 18 holes. She has an eight-stroke lead over ETBU's Emily Watson.
