Temple, Texas - The Centenary men's Golf team opened its season on Monday as the Gents shot a 28-over par 308 in round one of the Mary Hardin-Baylor Fall Invitational at the par 70 Sammons Park Golf Course to sit in eighth place heading into Tuesday's final day of play.
The Gents are six shots ahead of Belhaven and just seven strokes behind Howard Payne for seventh. Host Mary Hardin-Baylor leads the way after firing an 8-under 272, eight shots better than second-place UT Dallas (even par 280). Mary Hardin-Baylor's "B" team shot a 6-over 286 and is third. East Texas Baptist University and Hardin-Simmons are tied for fourth after shooting 150over 295. Texas Lutheran is sixth (17-over par 297), and Howard Payne is seventh at 21-over 301.
Junior Richard Polan (Brno, Czech Republic) and senior Harrison John (Lafayette, La.) led the Gents on Monday as each shot a 2-over par 72 to tie for 15th place. Sophomore Ricky Blair (Bossier City, La.) is tied for 36th after carding a 7-over par 77. Junior Devan Martin (Watson, La.) is 57th after shooting a 17-over par 87. Sophomore transfer Drew Bennett (Bossier City, La.) shot a 21-over 91 in his Centenary debut and freshman Tyler Jones (Stonewall, La.) sits in 80th place after shooting a 31-over 101.
William Sammons of Mary Hardin-Baylor is the top individual after shooting a 4-under par 66. He is one of six golfers under par and one of five MHB players. Cade Eldridge of UT Dallas is at even par as he and five others are within four shots of the individual lead. Polan and John are in striking distance of top 10 finishes on Tuesday.
The final round begins at 8:45 a.m. on Tuesday. John tees off on Hole #12A, Polan goes off on 12B, Blair on #13, Martin on 14, Bennett on 15, and Jones on #16.
