Danville, Va. - The Centenary lacrosse team wrapped up its season-opening roadtrip with a hard-fought 12-5 loss to the Averett University Cougars on Monday afternoon in a non-conference match played on Daly Field at Frank R. Campbell Stadium.
The Gents (0-2) and Cougars (1-0) played a very even match statistically in what was the season opener for Averett and the second game of the season for Centenary after the Maroon and White fell 21-2, to the Pfeiffer University Falcons on Saturday in North Carolina.
Sophomore Mark Temple (Houston, Texas) matched his career high for goals scored in a single game with four on Monday. Temple took 13 total shots, six on goal, and had two ground balls. Temple's previous four-goal performance came on Feb. 14, 2020 at LaGrange and he then proceeded to score two more on Feb. 16 at Ogelthorpe. Temple will have a chance to add to his impressive career in the month of February as the Gents still have two more games scheduled for this month. Freshman Wikenson Julien (Immokolee, Fla.) added the Gents' fifth goal, his first-career goal.
Centenary had 35 grounds balls to the Cougars' 31 and the Gents went 21-25 on clears. The Cougars finished with a slight edge in shots, 43-40. Senior Goalie Thomas Siskron (Shreveport) played solid game as he recorded 15 saves. Siskron now has 33 saves in Centenary's two games this season and 114 in his career. Averett, which led just 3-1 after the first period and 6-1 at halftime, was led by Liam Taylor's five goals and two assists. Nate Hann added three goals and four assists.
The Gents will face Southwestern on Sunday, Feb. 21 in their home opener in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference match set for 1 p.m. at Mayo Field. Centenary then hits the road again for a non-conference match at Hendrix on Feb. 24 at 7 p.m.
