
Baseball Splits Doubleheader With LeTourneau
The Centenary baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with the LeTourneau University YellowJackets on Tuesday evening at home, winning the first game 13-4 and falling 5-4 in game two at Shehee Stadium.
Shreveport - The Centenary baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader with the LeTourneau University YellowJackets on Tuesday evening at home, winning the first game 13-4 and falling 5-4 in game two at Shehee Stadium.
The Diamond Gents (17-12, 11-3 SCAC) will return to Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play on the road this weekend to face the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs in Seguin, Texas in a key series on Friday (6 p.m.) and Saturday (DH at 1 and 4 p.m.).
Centenary has won 12 of its last 16 games, six of eight, and have won four SCAC series in a row. The Diamond Gents are just a half-game behind Trinity University (24-8, 12-3 SCAC) in the conference standings.
The top four teams in the standings at the conclusion of the regular season qualify for the 2024 SCAC Tournament scheduled for May 3-5 in Cleburne, Texas.
Game one recap: Centenary 13 LeTourneau 4
The Diamond Gents crushed six pitchers for 13 runs on 10 hits and five Centenary arms limited the YellowJackets to just five hits while striking out eight to take game one of the DH.
Centenary finished with 10 hits, seven walks, three strikeouts, left seven on base, and made one error. LeTourneau had five hits, drew three walks, struck out eight times, left five on base, and did not make an error.
Junior LHP Tyler Herrera (Spring, Texas) picked up the win in relief for Centenary as he went 1.1 innings in relief of starter junior P Zachary Malone (Hallsville, Texas). Herrera (2-1) did not allow a run or a hit and struck out a pair as he faced four batters and threw 15 pitches – 10 for strikes. Malone went 2.2 innings and allowed four runs, all earned, on four hits with one BB and two K's. He faced 13 batters and threw 46 pitches (29 strikes).
Three other Centenary relievers - freshman P Logan Schmidt (Pearland, Texas), sophomore RHP Aidan Reichek (Bellaire, Texas), and freshman Kade Godfrey (Nacogdoches, Texas) followed Herrera and combined for three innings of work, allowing no runs on just one hit with four K's and two BB.
Kaden Peeples (0-1) took the loss for the YellowJackets as he followed starter Riley Davis and allowed three runs, all earned, and two hits with two BB as he lasted just 0.1 innings. He faced five batters and threw 14 pitches – six for strikes. Davis went the first two innings and also allowed three earned runs and one hit with three BB, a K, and one home run.
Camden Miller, the fifth LeTourneau pitcher, was tagged for seven runs, all earned, and four hits with two BB in the sixth inning as Centenary extended its 6-4 lead and put the game away.
Freshman 2B Braeden Morse (Pearland, Texas) went 3-3 as he had a season-high in hits and had two RBI and a run scored. Sophomore LF Carson Livesay (Lafayette, La.) was 2-3 with two runs scored, a stolen base, and two BB and freshman 1B Alex Miller (Cypress, Texas) was 1-3 a three-run homer, three runs scored and two BB. Senior RF Austyn Benoit (Welsh, La.) was 1-3 with an RBI, a BB and two runs scored and senior SS Jobee Boone (Opelousas, La.) finished 0-2 but had an RBI and scored a run. Sophomore CF Collin Pitts (Lufkin, Texas) was 1-3 with an RBI and a run scored and sophomore OF Matthew Herrera (Sunnyvale, Texas had hid his first hit of the season – a pinch-hit two-run double in the sixth.
LeTourneau was led by C Jagger Vaughn who finished 2-3 with two RBI and two runs scored as he hit a two-run homer and doubled. 3B Kevin Soto had the YellowJackets' other RBI – a third-inning groundout.
Game two recap: LeTourneau 5 Centenary 4
The YellowJackets jumped out to a 4-0 lead and held off a late Centenary rally to earn a DH split with the one-run win.
LeTourneau won despite making four errors and only producing five hits. The YellowJackets walked five times, struck out three times, and left four on base. Centenary had nine hits, walked six times, struck out six times, did not commit an error but left 14 on base.
Senior P Hank Bennett (0-2) started and suffered the loss as he allowed three runs, all earned, and two hits in 2.1 innings of work with one BB and one K and one home run allowed. He faced 10 batters and threw 30 pitches – 17 for strikes. Sophomore P Jordan Hodges (Longview, Texas) came in for Bennett and worked 2.2 innings and allowed two runs, both earned, on three hits with two BB, two K's, and one home run. He faced 12 batters and threw 47 pitches – 25 for strikes. Sophomore Colby Wilkerson (Kilgore, Texas) pitched 1.2 innings and did not allow a run or a hit and walked a pair. He faced seven batters and threw 24 pitches – 11 for strikes. Freshman Kade Godfrey (Nacogdoches, Texas) faced one batter as he got the final out of the seventh inning.
Calvin Lopez (1-0) got the win for the YellowJackets in relief. He was the third pitcher of the evening and went 1.2 innings and did not allow a run on three hits and walked three with two K's. He faced 10 batters, hitting one, and threw 47 pitches (22 strikes). Starter Lane Holman went three innings and allowed no runs on three hits with a BB and a K. He faced 10 batters, hitting one, and threw 37 pitches – 24 for strikes.
Cade Hathorn worked an inning and allowed two runs, one earned, on three hits. He faced 10 batters and threw 21 pitches (14 strikes). Dylan Cortes finished the game and picked up his first save of the season as he went 2.1 innings and allowed two runs, both earned, on two hits with two BB and three K's. He faced 12 batters, hitting one, and threw 33 pitches – 21 strikes.
C Blake Vice put the YellowJackets ahead 1-0 with a solo homer in the second and LeTourneau extended its lead with three more in the third for a 4-0 advantage. Centenary responded with two runs in the bottom of the third as Miller doubled and went to third on an error and sophomore 3B Clay Menard (Berwick, La.) scored. Benoit followed with an RBI single to score Miller to make it 4-2.
LeTourneau CF Xander Nabors belted a solo homer in the fifth to make it 5-2 but the Diamond Gents inched closer an inning later as freshman DH Walker Wicklund (Shreveport, La.) drove in two with a single to make it a 5-4 game. Matthew Herrera then pinch-hit for Pitts and was hit by a pitch from Cortes to load the bases. Cortes, however, locked in and struck out both senior C Jake Gonce (Katy, Texas) and freshman Miles Keith (Lindale, Texas) to escape the jam and preserve the lead. Cortez then retired the Diamond Gents in order in the seventh to nail down the save and give the YellowJackets the one-run win and DH split.
Boone and Wicklund finished a combined 4-7 with two RBI, Livesay was 1-5, Pitts 1-2 with a BB, and Miller was 1-3 with an RBI, two runs scored, and two BB. Menard was 0-2 but scored a pair of runs and walked once, Benoit was 1-3 with an RBI and a walk, Gonce was 0-3 with a BB and Keith went 1-3.
Nabors and Vice combined to go 2-5 with two homers, two RBI, two BB, and three runs scored. RF Dane Jones went 1-3 with an RBI, a BB, and a run scored and SS Devin Greaff was 2-3 with one run.
