
Baseball Falls to Comets In Slugfest
The Centenary baseball team lost a slugfest to the University of Texas at Dallas Comets by a score of 17-10 on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game at UTD Baseball Field.
Richardson, Texas - The Centenary baseball team lost a slugfest to the University of Texas at Dallas Comets by a score of 17-10 on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference game at UTD Baseball Field.
The Diamond Gents (18-15) finished 0-4 against the Comets (25-12) this season after falling three previous times to them last month and are now 10-10 on the road while the Comets improved to 12-3 at home this season.
Centenary finished with seven hits, walked 10 times, struck out six times, left nine on base, and made two errors. UT-Dallas had 18 hits, walked eight times, struck out eight times, left 10 on base, and also committed two errors. The Comets stole seven bases and had eight extra-base hits – three home runs and five doubles.
The Diamond Gents took an early 2-0 lead after scoring two runs in the top of the second, but the lead did not last long as the Comets exploded for nine runs in the bottom half of the second and added one more in the third to take a comfortable 10-2 lead. Each team scored a run in the fourth and then Centenary scored once in the fifth but the Comets scored three times to lead 14-4.
Centenary scored a single run in the seventh and UT-Dallas scored three in the bottom half. The Diamond Gents scored five times in the top of the ninth inning to finish with 10 runs, marking the 13th time they have reached double-digit runs this season.
Sophomore Colby Wilkerson (Kilgore, Texas) started on the mound and took the loss to fall to 0-1 as he allowed three runs, all earned, and three hits in one inning of work with no walks and three strikeouts. He faced seven batters, hit one batter and allowed one home run, and threw 29 pitches – 15 for strikes. Freshman P Logan Schmidt (Pearland, Texas) came in for Wilkerson and faced five batters and was charged with for runs (three earned) and three hits with one BB. He threw 20 pitches (nine strikes) in his 0.1 innings. Senior RHP Hank Bennett (Richmond, Texas) pitched 1.1 innings and gave up three runs, all earned, on four hits with a BB, a K, and a home run. He faced 10 batters, hit one, and threw 32 pitches – 18 for strikes.
Sophomore P Jordan Hodges (Longview, Texas) pitched 1.1 innings and allowed two runs, both earned, and two hits with three BB and one K. He faced eight batters and threw 31 pitches – 14 for strikes. Junior P Zachary Malone (Hallsville, Texas) followed Hodges and went an inning and allowed two earned runs and two hits with one K and allowed a home run. He faced five batters and threw 23 pitches – 12 for strikes. Freshman Kade Godfrey (Nacogdoches, Texas) pitched 1.2 innings and allowed three runs, all earned, and three hits with two BB and two K's. He faced 10 batters and threw 43 pitches (24 strikes). Sophomore P Royce Congi (Houston, Texas) pitched the final 1.1 innings and allowed one hit and walked one. He faced six batters and threw 20 pitches – 11 for strikes.
Senior SS Jobee Boone (Opelousas, La.) finished 2-3 with three runs scored and two walks and freshman 1B Alex Miller (Cypress, Texas) went 2-5 with a solo homer and two runs scored to lead the Centenary offense. Senior RF Austyn Benoit (Welsh, La.) was 0-2 but walked three times and scored two runs, sophomore CF Collin Pitts (Lufkin, Texas) finished 0-2 with two RBI and a walk and sophomore 3B Clay Menard (Berwick, La.) finished 1-4.
Sophomore DH Lenny Forth (Flower Mound, Texas) went 0-2 but had an RBI and scored a run, freshman 2B Braeden Morse (Pearland, Texas) was 0-2 but walked twice and scored a run, freshman Trace Shirley (Cleveland, Texas) had a pinch-hit RBI as he drew a bases-loaded walk, and junior McKenly McLaughlin (Georgetown, Texas) delivered a two-RBI single as a pinch-hitter in the ninth.
Apollo Cassimatis (3-2) started for the Comets and picked up the win and went six innings and allowed four runs, three earned, with four hits. He walked three and struck out five and allowed one home run. He faced 26 batters and threw 110 pitches – 65 for strikes. Four UT-Dallas relivers covered the next three innings and allowed six runs (five earned) and three hits with seven BB and one K.
Six Comets recorded multi-hit games, led by a 4-5 performance from CF Jaeger Self who had four RBI, a double, two runs scored, and two stolen bases. 2B Albert Garza went 2-4 with an RBI, a run scored, and two stolen bases and DH Josh Johnson was 3-4 with two home runs, four RBI, and three runs scored.
RF Luke Finn walked three times and stole a base, SS Efren Moss went 3-5 with two RBI and a run scored, C Payton Taylor was 2-3 with an RBI, three runs scored and two BB and 3B Dylan Bivins finished 0-4 but scored two runs and walked twice. 1B Zach Landry went 1-3 with an RBI, two runs scored, a walk, and a stolen base and LF Lucas Rexin was 2-4 with two RBI and three runs scored.
Centenary returns to Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play this weekend as the Maroon and White face conference leader Trinity University at Shehee Stadium. The series begins on Friday with a single game at 6 p.m. followed by a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 and 4 p.m. The Diamond Gents will honor their 2024 senior class following the second game on Saturday.
