
Men's Basketball Releases 2021-22 Schedule
The Centenary men’s basketball program has released its 2021-22 regular season schedule, as the Gents open their season on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at home versus the Arlington Baptist University Patriots at 7 p.m. in the Gold Dome.
Shreveport – The Centenary men's basketball program has released its 2021-22 regular season schedule, as the Gents open their season on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at home versus the Arlington Baptist University Patriots at 7 p.m. in the Gold Dome.
Centenary is scheduled to play 23 regular-season contests and a pair of exhibition games, with 12 home games and 13 road/neutral games. The Gents will play 16 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference games, eight at home and eight on the road and will begin SCAC play at Dallas on Dec. 8. The Gents are coming off of another successful season under head coach Chris Dorsey, who is entering his fifth season at the helm. The Maroon and White went finished 8-4 and 7-3 in SCAC play last season, an abbreviated one due to COVID-19. The Gents reached the semifinals of the SCAC Tournament in an impressive follow up to their 2020 NCAA Tournament appearance and SCAC tournament championship.
Dorsey is 54-38 after his first four seasons with the Gents including an impressive 39-21 mark in SCAC play. The Gents finished 18-10 and went 15-5 in SCAC play in 2019-20 as the Maroon and White set division III era program records for conference wins in a single season (15), winning streak (10), and home wins (10) in a single season as the Gents went 10-1 at home. The SCAC tournament title also marked the Gents' first men's basketball conference title since 1980 when the Maroon and White claimed both the regular season and conference tournament championships while a member of the Trans America Athletic Conference (now the Atlantic Sun Conference).
The Gents welcome LSUS to the Gold Dome on Thursday, Nov. 11 at 7 p.m. for a crosstown showdown exhibition contest. Centenary hits the road for the first time on Nov. 16 at Louisiana College at 6 p.m. and then plays a pair of games on Nov. 20-21 in the Millsaps Tournament in Jackson, Miss. The Gents will play East Texas Baptist University on Nov. 20 at 4 p.m. and then face either host Millsaps or Huntingdon College on Nov. 21 at 4 or 6 p.m. Centenary wraps up its week in the state of Mississippi with a non-conference game at Mississippi University for Women on Nov. 23.
Centenary faces Millsaps at home on Nov. 30 at 6 p.m. and then meets ULM in an exhibition game in Monroe, La. on Dec. 1. The Gents play the University of Dallas in Irving, Texas on Dec. 8 in their conference opener at 5:30 p.m. and then are back home to face Dallas again on Dec. 17 (5:30 p.m.) and Trinity on Dec. 19 at 1 p.m. Following the Christmas break, the Gents ring in the New Year with games against Southwestern on Dec. 31 at 5:30 p.m. and Texas Lutheran on Jan. 1 at 4 p.m.
The Gents are at Colorado College on Jan. 7 at 5:30 p.m. and at St. Thomas in Houston on Jan. 9 at Noon. Centenary then plays five of its next eight games at home from mid-January to the middle of February, beginning with a non-conference game versus Champion College on Jan. 15 at 4 p.m. The Gents then face the 'Roos of Austin College on Jan. 21 at 5:30 p.m. and then rematch with Austin in Sherman, Texas on Jan. 25 at 6 p.m. Centenary finishes the month of at home versus Schreiner on Jan. 30 at Noon.
Centenary faces Schreiner (Feb. 4 at 5:30 p.m.) and Trinity (Feb. 5 at 2 p.m.) on the road then comes home to play host to Colorado College (Feb. 11 at 5:30 p.m.) and St. Thomas (Feb. 13 at Noon). The Gents then finish the regular season with a pair of road games, on Feb. 18 at Southwestern at 5:30 p.m. and at Trinity on Feb. 19 at 2 p.m. The 2022 SCAC Championship is scheduled for Feb. 25-27 in Sherman, Texas.
Centenary is an impressive 18-4 in its last 22 conference games dating back to Jan. 25, 2020. The Gents finished last season as one of the top defensive teams in the nation, ranking 12th in the nation in scoring defense and 20th in field-goal percentage defense. Centenary was also 12th in turnovers forced and 10th in turnover margin. The Gents ranked first in the league in scoring defense, first in field goal percentage defense, number one in turnover margin, and second in steals. The Maroon and White ended the season allowing only one team to score at least 75 points against them, holding 11 of 12 opponents to less than 70 points and four below 60.
The Gents set a Gold Dome (1970-present) record on Feb. 9, 2021 as they allowed just 37 points to Colorado College in a 51-37 win, marking the fewest points scored by an opponent in the building. The 37 points also marks the fewest number of points allowed by the Maroon and White in the Division III era (2012-present). The Gents are a stellar 15-3 in their last 18 home games entering this season.
