Gents Welcome LSUS Thursday For “Kings Highway Clash”

Shreveport – The Centenary men's basketball team will face the LSUS Pilots on Thursday in a non-conference exhibition game featuring a matchup of two schools located just miles from each other that has been dubbed the "Kings Highway Clash" set for 7 p.m. at the Gold Dome.

The Gents (1-0) opened their season with an 87-77 victory over the Arlington Baptist University Patriots in a non-conference contest on Tuesday at home while the Pilots (1-2) also defeated the Patriots in their most recent game, 115-72, on Monday at home. Seven LSUS players scored in double digits in the win for head coach Kyle Blankenship's squad.

The Gents and Pilots are meeting for the sixth time but for the first time in the Gold Dome since Centenary recorded an 88-84 victory on Nov. 19, 2013 in its season opener. The Pilots won the most recent matchup between the two, 74-64 on their home court on Oct. 30, 2019.

Centenary, under the leadership of fifth-year head coach Chris Dorsey, won its season opener for the second season in a row and for the third time in the last four years. The Maroon and White are also unbeaten in their last three home openers. The Gents raced out to a 57-26 halftime lead as they shot a sizzling 58.3 % from the floor (21-36) and made 9 of 18 three-point attempts. Arlington Baptist outscored Centenary 51-30 in the second half but the Gents' sizeable halftime lead was too much to overcome for the Patriots as Centenary shot 43.8 % (32-73) for the game and made 11 of 32 three-point attempts. The Gents are a stellar 16-3 in their last 19 home games entering Thursday's action.

Three Gents scored in double figures on Tuesday, led by 17 apiece from Sophomore G Braeden Board (Rayne, La.) and senior F Jarrell Taylor (Leesville, La.). Junior G Jalen Behr (Athens, Ga.) added 12 points as he and Taylor were each making their Gents' debuts. Board was hot from the start as she scored 10 points in the first half alone as he went 3-3 from three-point range. He finished with six rebounds and three steals and his 17 points were a new career high. Taylor made 6 of his 9 field goal attempts in the first half and went 2-2 from beyond the arc while Behr was 4 of 6 from the field and made a pair of three-point baskets in the first 20 minutes. He also grabbed five rebounds and dished out a pair of assists.

Junior G Ralph Johnson (New Iberia, La.), Senior G Kile Mingo (Cypress, Texas), and senior G AJ Hall (Thibodaux, La.) each scored nine points and Johnson had four assists, three steals, and two rebounds. Mingo added three rebounds, two steals, and an assist, and Hall grabbed a pair of rebounds. Junior F Seth Thomas (Kilgore, Texas) scored seven points in 26 minutes along with three rebounds, two assists, a block, and a steal. Junior F Joseph Wiggins (Bossier City, La.) scored four points in 10 minutes in his first game as a Gent and junior G Drew Young (Lake Charles, La.) scored three points with a rebound in 12 minutes.

Centenary will hit the road for four-straight games following Thursday's contest. The Gents will face Louisiana Christian University (formerly Louisiana College) in Pineville on Nov. 16 and then head to Jackson, Miss. to compete in the Millsaps Tournament Nov. 20-21 and finish up the road trip at Mississippi University for Women on Nov. 23 in Columbus, Miss.
