Gents Fall On Friday at Schreiner, 71-57

Kerrville, Texas - The Centenary men's basketball team fell 71-57 to the Schreiner University Mountaineers on Friday evening in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest at  Stephens Family Arena.

The Gents fell to 10-9 overall and 5-6 in SCAC play while the Mountaineers improved to 11-10 and 9-3 in league play. The teams were meeting for the second time in just six days after Schreiner handed the Maroon and White a 90-74 loss at the Gold Dome on Sunday afternoon.

Four Gents scored in double figures on Friday led by a season-high 12 points from junior F Joseph Wiggins (Bossier City, La.). Senior G Kile Mingo (Cypress, Texas) scored 11, and junior F Seth Thomas (Kilgore, Texas) and junior G Ralph Johnson (White Castle, La.) each added 10. Four Schreiner players reached double digits led by a game-high 24 from Alex Dehoyos.

Centenary shot just 36.1 % (22-61) overall and struggled from beyond the arc (6-22) and at the free throw line (7-13) and was outrebounded 39-27. Schreiner shot 49 % overall, making 24-49 shots overall and was solid at the free throw line, sinking 15-18 attempts for 83.3 %. The Mountaineers also struggled from 3-point range, making only 8-22 attempts for 36.4 %. Kamden Ross recorded a double-double for Schreiner with 10 points and 10 rebounds in 38 minutes, and Dehoyos added five rebounds, three assists, three steals, and a blocked shot to his 24 points in 27 minutes on 9-13 shooting and nailed five treys.

The Gents had 15 steals, 10 assists, and blocked five shots while the Mountaineers finished with nine steals, 13 assists, and one blocked shot. Centenary has now recorded 15 or more steals in a game an impressive three times this season. Schreiner finished with a slight advantage (28-26) in both points in the paint and bench points (9-7). The Gents scored 15 points off of 24 Schreiner turnovers and the Mountaineers scored 14 off of 19 Centenary miscues. Fast break points were even with seven for each team and the Gents picked up six second-chance points to two for Schreiner.

Schreiner led 31-22 at the half and outscored Centenary 40-35 after halftime. The Gents trailed 10-2 four minutes into the game and by 16 (31-15) with 2:38 remaining but a 7-0 run gave the Maroon and White some momentum headed into the second half. The Gents tied the game at 37-37 with 15:41 left and a trey by Johnson gave Centenary a 43-41 lead at the 11:59 mark but that would be the Gents' final lead of the game. Schreiner ended the game on a 30-14 run to seal the win.

Johnson played 28 minutes and shot 4-10 overall and hit both of his 3-point attempts. He added three assists, three rebounds, three steals, and blocked a shot as he reached double figures for the fourth time this season. Wiggins played a season-high 30 minutes and established his new career-high in points, eclipsing the 11 he scored on Jan. 24 against Texas Lutheran. He was 6-8 from the floor on Friday with five rebounds, three steals, and blocked two shots.

Thomas was 3-8 overall and 4-6 from the free throw line in 38 minutes with four rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Mingo scored 11 and made a pair of 3-pointers in 29 minutes of action. He was 4-11 from the floor and had four steals, three rebounds, two assists and blocked a shot.  

Junior G Jalen Behr (Athens, Ga.) had a solid game with seven points and five rebounds in 24 minutes. He tallied two steals and had one assist. Senior G AJ Hall (Thibodaux, La.) came off the bench and played 11 minutes and scored three points and junior G Drew Young (Lake Charles, La.) scored four in six minutes.

Centenary wraps up the weekend on Saturday as the Gents face Trinity in San Antonio at 2 p.m.
