Ladies Drop DH To St. John Fisher On Sunday

Shreveport - The Centenary softball team dropped a non-conference doubleheader to the St. John Fisher University Cardinals, 7-3 and 4-0, on Sunday at the Centenary Softball Complex.

The Ladies (4-6) and Cardinals (2-0) were meeting for the first time in history. Centenary was back in action for the first time since sweeping a non-conference doubleheader over the Millsaps College Majors back on Feb. 21 at home, winning 5-2 in game one and 5-3 in game two.

The Cardinals took an early 2-0 lead after their first at-bat, the Ladies then tied it with a pair of runs in their half of the third, but four runs in the top of the fifth gave the visitors a 6-2 lead.

The Ladies got one back in the bottom of the fifth but the Cardinals tacked one more on in the seventh to secure the win. St. John Fisher finished with eight hits and drew three walks with one stolen base. The Cardinals left seven on base and committed two errors but did not strike out. The Ladies had five hits, committed three errors, walked four times, struck out seven times, and left six on base. Centenary stole three bases and was caught just once.

Sophomore P Anna Scarbrock (Alexandria, La.) suffered the loss for the Ladies as she went four innings and allowed six runs, four earned, on six hits with a walk and no strikeouts to fall to 2-2 on the season. Freshman Emma Crow (Krotz Springs, La.) relieved Scarbrock and went the final three innings and allowed just two hits and one unearned run with two walks. She did not record a strikeout and hit one batter.

Jessica Patterson (1-0) got the win for the Cardinals as she pitched five innings and allowed three runs (one earned) on four hits with four walks and six K's. Jenna Leydecker picked up the save as she worked the final two innings and allowed a hit and struck out one.

RF Cassidy Evanestski produced a one-out RBI single in the top of the first and DP Clare Boegel singled home Evanestski for the Cardinals' two runs. Junior RF Mackenzie Cox (Alexandria, La.) reached on an error to begin the third inning and scored on an error for the Ladies' first run and Sophomore DP Viviana Rivero (Redondo Beach, Calif.) hit a game-tying sacrifice fly.

Evanestski had a go-ahead two-run single in the fifth and Boegel had a two-run RBI single of her own to give the Cardinals a 6-2 lead. Senior LF Kaylea Patridge (Las Vegas, Nev.) singled home Cox in the bottom of the fifth for the Ladies' third and final run. A sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh by 3B Kelly Cournoyer made it 7-3 Cardinals.

Cox finished 1-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base, freshman 2B Catherine Stokes (Natchitoches, La.) was 1-2 with two walks and a run scored, and Patridge was 1-4 with an RBI and a stolen base. Senior CF Mallory Stout (Trinity, Texas) was 1-3 with a stolen base, and sophomore 1B Kaitlyn Dickey (Church Point, La.) finished 1-2 with a walk. Evanestski, Boegel, and 2B Madi Rose combined to go 6-11 with six RBI and four runs scored.

The Cardinals loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first but could only score one run. Freshman P/OF Alexis Roach (Pineville, La.) allowed a sacrifice fly but escaped the jam with two ground outs to end the inning.

Three scoreless innings followed until the Cardinals added a single run in the top of the fifth as Boegel singled home Evanestski with two outs to make it 2-0. The Cardinals added a pair in the sixth as Evanestski struck again with an RBI single and CF Allie Klonowski doubled in a run.

St. John Fisher finished with nine hits and drew four walks. The Cardinals left 11 on base, struck out three times, and committed one error. The Ladies had just four hits and left eight on base. The Maroon and White played error-free ball and drew two walks while only striking out twice.

Roach (0-1) was charged with the loss as she allowed four runs, all earned, on nine hits in 5.2 innings of work with four walks and two strikeouts while hitting two batters. Freshman Abigail Hodgson (Georgetown, Texas) pitched the final 1.1 innings and had one strikeout. SJF's Ainsley Evanetski went the distance and allowed just four hits with two walks and two K's. She also hit two batters.

Cox was 1-3 with a walk and a stolen base, Rivero and Dickey each went 1-3, and sophomore 3B Alyssa Akers (Maurice, La.) had a walk. Junior 1B Isabelle Dominguez (Newark, Calif.) pinch hit for Akers to start the seventh and singled, but Evanetski got the next three batters to seal the shutout win.

The Ladies will return to action next Sunday, March 12 at home for another non-conference doubleheader as they face Illinois- Wesleyan at Noon and 2 p.m.
