Shreveport - The Centenary women's soccer team was edged 2-1 by the University of St. Thomas Celts in its home opener and Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference opener on Saturday evening at Mayo Field.

The Ladies (0-2, 0-1 SCAC) fell 2-0 to the East Texas Baptist University Tigers in its season opener on Thursday while St. Thomas improved to 2-0 (1-0 SCAC) this season after earning a 2-1 win at Howard Payne on Thursday.

St. Thomas took a 1-0 lead just over eight minutes into the match as Karson Funderburk converted a penalty kick after being fouled inside the box. That score held until the 77th minute when Emily McCoy broke past the Ladies' defense and scored an unassisted goal to make it 2-0.

The Ladies, however, answered with a score just over four minutes later as junior D Alexa Hinojosa (Pasadena, Texas) found the net following a corner kick by senior MF/D Gabby McDonald (Pasadena, Texas) in the 82nd minute. The Celts, though, were able to keep the Ladies off of the board for the final nine minutes and secure the win.

Junior GK Karlie Delhommer (St. Amant, La.) played all 90 minutes for the Ladies and allowed the two goals while recording eight saves. Celts' GK Carmen Lozada also went the distance and had a quiet night as she allowed the one goal but did not make a save. St. Thomas finished with a decisive edge in shots (22-6) and took six corner kicks to the Ladies' two. The match featured 33 combined fouls and four yellow cards.

Centenary remains at home next weekend as the Maroon and White welcome Sul Ross State (Sept. 9) and Howard Payne (Sept. 11) to town for a pair of non-conference matches.
