Ladies Lose Tough Match At Home Friday To Sul Ross State, 3-1

Shreveport - The Centenary women's soccer team fell 3-1 to the Sul Ross State University Lobos in a non-conference match on Friday evening at Mayo Field.

The Ladies (0-3) took a 1-0 lead in the 56th minute and looked poised to win for the first time this season, but the Lobos (2-2) responded with three goals in the final 12 minutes of the match to pick up the win in the first meeting between the two teams in history.

Centenary was edged 2-1 last Saturday at home by St. Thomas in its home opener following a 2-0 season-opening loss against ETBU on Sept. 1. Sul Ross, which defeated St. Thomas 3-1 in Houston on Thursday, have won two games in a row.

Centenary senior MF Celeste Muniz (Denton, Texas) got the scoring started on Friday as she found the net in the 56th minute for the Ladies' second goal of the season, her first, and the fourth of her career. Muniz gathered a pass from senior D Yosi Bouslog (Friendswood, Texas) around midfield and raced past multiple Lobos defenders and then rifled the ball to the right of Sul Ross GK Celeste De La Rosa for the score.

The 1-0 lead lasted until the 79th minute when Aylin Pereyra snuck the ball into the corner of the net past Centenary sophomore GK Madison Ersoff (Shreveport, La.) to even the match. Just over three minutes later, Deserie Herrera scored off an assist from Joanna Estrada for a 2-0 Lobos' lead. Allison Cohen scored the Lobos' third and final goal of the night, assisted by Pereyra, in the final minute of the match.

Ersoff played all 90 minutes and made five saves while De La Rosa also went the distance and made two saves. Sul Ross outshot the Ladies 18-6 including a 13-3 advantage in the second half. The Lobos took four corner kicks to the Ladies' three and the teams combined for 19 fouls.

The Ladies nearly took a 1-0 lead just five minutes into the match as senior MF/D Gabby McDonald (Pasadena, Texas) was fouled in the box and was awarded a penalty kick, but her attempt to the left corner was denied by De La Rosa and kept the match scoreless, where it was at halftime until all four goals were scored in the final 45 minutes.

Centenary faces Howard Payne University on Sunday in a non-conference match set for Noon. Live stats and live video will be available.
