Centenary Walks Off UT-Dallas To Earn Split of Doubleheader

Shreveport - The Centenary softball team capped its first weekend of play of the 2020 season with a thrilling 4-3 walk-off win on Sunday in game two of a non-conference doubleheader versus the UT-Dallas Comets at the Centenary Softball Complex.

Junior Erin Lewis (Leesville, La.) singled in Kirstyn Gomez (Deer Park, Texas) with two outs facing a full count and the score tied at 3-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning for the Ladies' first win of the season. UT-Dallas took game one of the doubleheader by a score of 9-2.

The Ladies fell, 13-0, in their season opener on Saturday at home to East Texas Baptist but put that loss and a tough loss in the first game of the day to the Comets behind them and came away with the walk-off win. Centenary led UT-Dallas by a score of 2-0 entering the sixth inning in the first half of the DH before an eight-run sixth did them in.

Centenary took an early 3-0 lead on the Comets in game two of the doubleheader after one inning. Shortstop Kaylea Patridge (Las Veags, NV) scored on a wild pitch for the game's first run and then senior left fielder Maddie Fremen (Luling, La.) delivered an RBI single to make it 2-0. Second baseman Jaymee Wilkinson (Brazoria, Texas) capped the inning with an RBI single for the 3-0 lead.

The Comets quickly tied the game in the next half inning as center fielder Avery Markley had an RBI single and left fielder Elizabeth Brann slapped a two-run single up the middle to tie the game at 3-3.

Sophomore Ashley Hunter (Benton, La.) started in the circle for the Ladies and tossed a complete game. Hunter allowed six hits and three runs, all earned, in her seven innings of work while walking two and striking out one. She allowed four hits, a walk, and hit a batter in the first two innings and then settled down and gave up just two hits and no runs over the final five frames to improve to 1-0 this season. Blaire Evans took the loss for the Comets.

Lewis led the Ladies with two hits while Brann and Nicole Peters each collected two hits for UT-Dallas. Lewis is 3-9 with three RBI after three games for Centenary while senior SS Haley Campbell (Erath, La.) is 3-8 with a pair of doubles.

Centenary welcomes Pacific to town next Saturday, Feb. 15 for a non-conference doubleheader set for 2 and 4 p.m.
