Cleburne, Texas - Freshman left-hander Tyler Herrera was named both the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year and Pitcher of the Year on Friday on the opening day of the 2022 SCAC Championship. 

Herrera, who was also named to the All-SCAC First Team, was honored before No. 3 seed Centenary's game versus No. 2 seed Texas Lutheran set for a 4:45 p.m. first pitch. 

Herrera (Spring, Texas) leads the conference in ERA at 1.11 and is 6-0 with two complete games. He has made 13 appearances and seven starts and has allowed just seven earned runs, 21 walks, and one home run all season. He has gone at least 5.1 innings in all seven of his starts. Herrera is eighth in the SCAC in innings pitched (57.0) and has 52 K's to rank in the top 10. He ranks seventh in the country in division III in ERA, is a two-time SCAC Pitcher of the Week recipient, and was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Rookie of the Week on March 31.

He becomes the fourth Centenary player to be named SCAC Freshman or Co-Freshman of the Year joining Paul Arecement (2013), Aaron Quintanilla (2014), and Chris Zapata (2015). Herrera is the second-straight Gent to be named SCAC Pitcher of the Year after Preston Ludwick earned the honor last year. Taylor Henry (2015) and Matthew Devillier (2017) were also named SCAC Pitcher of the Year.
