Cleburne, Texas- The No. 3 seed Centenary baseball team fell 6-4 in 10 innings to No. 1 seed Trinity on Sunday in the 2022 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championship round forcing a final deciding game between the teams at The Depot at Cleburne Station.
The Diamond Gents (26-16) and Tigers (32-9) will play again at 4 p.m. with the winner claiming the SCAC Championship. Centenary, which lost for just the third time in 15 games, is making its sixth all-time appearance in the championship game. The Maroon and White finished as runner-up in 2013, 2015, and 2018.
Trinity held a 2-0 lead until Centenary scored a pair in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game. Senior 1B Preston Ludwick (Pflugerville, Texas) delivered a clutch two-out two-run single to tie the game. Centenary scored two more in the sixth to take a 4-2 lead but the Tigers tied it with two in the seventh. Neither team could push across a run in the eighth and ninth as the game headed to extras tied at 4-4.
Trinity SS Michael Montrezza belted a two-run home run with one out in the top of the 10th and Tigers' reliever Harrison Durow (6-0) retired the Diamond Gents in order in the bottom half to seal the win. Junior RHP Parker Primeaux (Lake Charles, La.) suffered the loss to fall to 9-5. Ludwick started and went 5.2 innings allowing just two runs, both earned, and four hits with two walks and five K's. Freshman LHP Tyler Herrera (Spring, Texas) came in for Ludwick and went 1.2 innings, allowing two earned runs and five hits with a walk and no strikeouts.
