Fort Worth, Texas – The Centenary football team recorded a 34-27 victory over the Mary Hardin-Baylor JV squad on Monday evening at Castleberry High School.

The Gents scrimmaged both Millsaps and ETBU last month in what were part situational style scrimmages followed by live action for two quarters but Monday's contest was a live game with four quarters.

The Gents, led by head coach and Shreveport native Byron Dawson, have made their historic return to the gridiron this season for the first time since the 1940's. Centenary has eight contests remaining this fall – three at home and five on the road.

Centenary returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 9 against Community Christian College at Evangel Christian Academy –Dawson's alma mater. The Maroon and White will then play John Melvin University on the 16th at 6 p.m. and finally the Haywood Crushers on Sept. 30 at 1 p.m.

Freshman QB Vance Feuerbacher connected with senior WR Braeden Board (Rayne, La.) for a pair of touchdowns and Feuerbacher kept it himself for one TD on the ground.

Centenary took a 21-14 lead at halftime and built a 34-14 lead with 6:03 remaining in the fourth quarter until the Cru scored two late scores including one on a fourth down with under a minute to play to make it 34-27. The Cru tried an onside kick but they were offsides and the Gents took two knees to seal the win.

The Gents' defense harassed a trio of MHB quarterbacks – Bryce Morton, Sean Wilson, and Cole Matsuda, throughout the night but especially in the second half and recorded a multitude of sacks and tackles for loss.

Senior DL DJ Smith (Bossier City, La.), Sophomore LB Marlon Young (Shreveport, La.), Freshman LB Devon Strickland (Shreveport, La.) all had big games on the defensive side of the ball. Young is a Huntington high school product and Strickland prepped at C.E. Byrd. Freshman Cedrick Allison (Oakdale, La.) and sophomore and Southwood product Josh Ware (Shreveport, La.) were both productive running the ball.
