Gents Hammer Louisiana Community Christian On Saturday Night

Shreveport - The Centenary football team dominated in all phases of the game on Saturday night en route to a convincing 79-6 victory over the Louisiana Community Christian Huskies at Evangel Christian Academy.

The Gents, who registered an impressive 34-27 victory over the Mary Hardin-Baylor JV squad, breezed past the overmatched Huskies on Saturday in front of a good crowd at Rodney Duron Field.

Centenary will be back at Evangel next Saturday to face John Melvin University at 6 p.m. The Gents will be off on the 23rd and then return to action on Sept. 30 against the Haywood Crusaders at 1 p.m. also at Evangel.

Centenary head coach Byron Dawson coached on the same field where he starred as an Eagle during his decorated Evangel career and then later returned as head coach. Dawson, one of the most recognizable names in local football at any level, was selected as the USA Today High School All American Defensive MVP for Louisiana, named Class 3A All-State and Defensive MVP, and helped lead Evangel to a 15-0 record in 1997, three state championships, and a No. 17 national ranking, among other accolades.

Dawson served as head coach at his alma mater for 15 seasons. During his time as defensive line coach, defensive coordinator, and eventually head coach, Dawson led Evangel to a state championship and national rankings; garnered Coach of the Year honors at the city, state, and national level; and coached 10 NFL players, including 2019 first round draft pick Jerry Tillery.
