Shreveport – Tyler Welch has been named an Assistant Coach for the Centenary Baseball program, Director of Athletics and Recreation David Orr announced.
Welch, a former Gent baseball player from 2018-22, graduated in May of 2021 with a double major in History and Political Science while being named to the Spring SCAC Student-Athlete Academic Honor Roll three times.
"I am so excited to have Tyler back with us," said Centenary head coach Mike Diaz. "He had an outstanding career for us as a player, and was everything we look for in a person. I have no doubt he will make Centenary Baseball better from day one as a coach."
Welch, a native of Pineville, La., finished his career as one of the most versatile players in program history in the division III era (2012-present) as he found himself filling many roles on the field. He was a standout player as he was named to the 2021 D3baseball.com All-Region Team, and was a two-time All-Conference selection.
During his time at Centenary, he saw his time on the field as a pitcher and hitter, proving himself in those separate roles as a fierce competitor and team player. Welch helped lead Centenary to the 2022 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament title and an NCAA Tournament appearance, as he batted a stellar batting average of .364 with 63 hits, which is tied for the third most in a single season in program history in the D3 era. Welch ranks in the top 10 all-time in 19 statistical categories – both hitting and pitching.
