
Baseball On Road For Weekend Series At Southwestern
The Centenary baseball team is on the road this weekend in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play to face the Southwestern University Pirates beginning with a doubleheader on Friday at 3 p.m. at Rockwell Family Field.
Georgetown, Texas – The Centenary baseball team is on the road this weekend in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play to face the Southwestern University Pirates beginning with a doubleheader on Friday at 3 p.m. at Rockwell Family Field.
The series between the Diamond Gents (11-16, 7-11 SCAC) and the Pirates (10-16, 8-9 SCAC) will conclude on Saturday with a single game at 1 p.m.

Centenary took two of three games last weekend at home in league play over the University of the Ozarks Eagles at Shehee Stadium, splitting a doubleheader on Saturday, with the Maroon and White winning game one 6-5 and falling 9-6 in game two, and then the Diamond Gents took Sunday's rubber game by a score of 9-2 to clinch the series win.
The Diamond Gents, 2-5 on the road this season, went 4-0 against the Pirates last season as they swept a regular-season series at home and then claimed a 6-4 win in their SCAC Tournament opener last May in Cleburne, Texas. Centenary went 3-1 against Southwestern during the 2023 season which included another win in Cleburne and the Diamond Gents swept the Pirates at home in 2022 as they have dominated the recent series, winning 10 of the last 11.
Southwestern, 8-8 at home this season, aims to snap a five-game losing streak this weekend as the Pirates were swept last weekend by Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Texas.
Centenary is currently seventh in the league standings while Southwestern is sixth, 1.5 games ahead of the Diamond Gents. The top four teams in the standings at the conclusion of the regular season will earn a berth in the 2025 SCAC Baseball Tournament held May 2-4 at Dell Diamond Park in Round Rock, Texas. The University of St. Thomas (11-6) is currently in fourth place.
Centenary is hitting .261 as a team with a with a .364 OBP and slugging percentage of .344. The Diamond Gents have hit eight home runs and collected 225 hits of which 51 are extra-base hits. Centenary's pitching staff has a 5.46 ERA, allowing 181 runs (140 earned) and 243 hits in 230.2 IP with 171 strikeouts.
Freshman IF Noah Paulson (El Lago, Texas) leads the team in batting average at .344 and has a .442 OBP and is slugging .422. He has 22 hits in 64 at-bats with 12 runs scored, nine RBI, three doubles, eight walks, and five stolen bases.
Sophomore 1B Alex Miller (Cypress, Texas) is hitting .330 (.410 OBP/.480 slugging %) and is the team leader in both hits (33) and RBI (17) and is second in runs scored (19). Miller is also second in home runs (two) and tied for the team lead in doubles (nine). Miller has posted 12 multi-hit games this season including a pair of three-hit performances.
Freshman OF Blaine Birkelbach (Pearland, Texas) is hitting .320 (.393 OBP/.413 slugging) with 24 hits, 14 runs scored, 12 RBI, seven BB, six stolen bases, three doubles and two triples. Birkelbach was red-hot this past week in four games and especially over the weekend against Ozarks. He hit .467 (7-15) for the week with two RBI, four runs scored, two BB, and four stolen bases. The rookie finished with a .529 OBP and slugged .667, had a trio of multi-hit games and had a double and a triple.
Freshman IF Aron Gillum (Shreveport, La.) is hitting .287 (.374 OBP/.309 slugging) with 27 hits, 14 runs, two doubles, 10 RBI, 11 BB, and six stolen bases. Freshman LF Brody Hebert (Houma, La.) is hitting .262 (.373 OBP/.500 slugging) with a team-leading three home runs, 11 hits, 10 runs scored, eight BB, a double, and four stolen bases.
Senior SS Jobee Boone (Opelousas, La.) is hitting .253 (.343 OBP/.500 slugging) with 24 hits, a team-high 24 runs scored, 15 RBI, three home runs (tied for team lead), 10 BB, five stolen bases, three doubles, and a triple. Boone has recorded eight multi-hit games and one 3-hit performance. Sophomore C/IF Miles Keith (Lindale, Texas) is hitting .254 (.349 OBP/.380 slugging) with 18 hits, 16 RBI, nine doubles, and 10 runs scored.
Senior LHP Tyler Herrera (Spring, Texas) is in the midst of an outstanding season as he is third in the conference in ERA (2.59) and strikeouts (45) and tied for third in innings pitched (48.2). Herrera is 4-2 in eight appearances (all starts) with one complete game and has allowed just 14 earned runs and 14 walks along with 47 hits this season.
Freshman P Tony Barcelona V (Pearland, Texas) is 1-0 with a 2.19 ERA in nine appearances and he has allowed just three earned runs in 12.1 IP with eight K's as he has proven to be one of the Diamond Gents' top bullpen arms this season.

James Vaquero and Christian Melillo are a formidable duo for the Pirates as each is hitting better than .350 and have combined for 65 hits, 41 runs scored, 11 doubles, four triples, two home runs, and 29 RBI.
Ryan Corbett is the team leader in appearances on the mound (11) and is 2-1 with a save while Stephen Rutherford has started the most games (seven) on the team and is 2-1 with a 3.62 ERA.
