
Baseball Faces Austin College In SCAC Play
The Centenary baseball team returns to action this weekend at home against Austin College in a three-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series beginning on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Shehee Stadium.

The series between the Diamond Gents (2-4, 0-3 SCAC) and 'Roos (0-6, 0-3 SCAC) concludes on Sunday with a doubleheader set for 1 and 4 p.m. Centenary was swept last weekend in its opening conference series against Texas Lutheran University while the 'Roos were swept at Trinity University to open league play.
This weekend's series was originally scheduled to be played in Sherman, Texas and hosted by Austin College, but winter weather forced the games to be moved to Shreveport. Centenary, despite playing on its home field, will be designated as the visiting team this weekend.
Centenary aims to shake off last weekend's sweep to TLU and get on track offensively as the Maroon and White are hitting just .249 as a team through six games with a .339 OBP and slugging percentage of .321. The Diamond Gents, though, have hit three home runs and collected 48 hits of which eight are extra-base hits. Centenary's pitching staff has a 5.83 ERA, allowing 39 runs (35 earned) and 63 hits in 54.0 IP.
Freshman IF Aron Gillum (Shreveport, La.) has gotten off to a hot start to his collegiate career as he has hit .423 (11-26) in his first six games with an OBP of .444 and has slugged .462. The rookie went 2-4 with four RBI and a run scored in his debut on Feb. 8 in a 10-5 win over LaGrange and has posted four multi-hit performances in his six games with five RBI, three runs scored, and a stolen base. Gillum hit .384 (5-13) with an RBI in the Diamond Gents' series last weekend against TLU.
Freshman LF Brody Hebert (Houma, La.) has had an impressive start to his collegiate career as the rookie is hitting .333 with a .444 OBP and is slugging .733. He has hit was hit a team-best two home runs and hit .444 with a .583 OBP and slugged 1.111 in his first three games in the "Gents Classic" on opening weekend at home against Huntingdon College, Rhodes College, and LaGrange. Hebert totaled three RBI, scored two runs, walked three times, and stole a base that weekend. He hit a solo home run against LaGrange on Feb. 8 in a 10-5 Centenary win and then belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning on Feb. 9 against Huntingdon which proved to be the game-winner in a 2-1 Centenary win. He has three RBI, three BB, and two runs scored so far this season.
Sophomore 1B Alex Miller (Cypress, Texas) is hitting .333 (8-24) with a homer run, a double, a run scored, and one BB while not striking out through six games. Sophomore UT Gage Morris (Livingston, Texas) is batting .250 with two doubles and four runs scored, and sophomore C/IF Miles Keith (Lindale, Texas) is hitting .333 with three RBI, a double, two BB and a run scored.
Senior LHP Tyler Herrera (Spring, Texas) started on the mound against LaGrange on Feb. 8 and picked up the win as he worked six innings and allowed two runs, both earned, on nine hits with three BB and four K. He faced 29 batters and threw 96 pitches (57 strikes). He is 1-1 this season in two appearances (both starts) with a 3.00 ERA. In 12.0 IP he has walked four and struck out 12.
Freshman UT Tyler Hughes (Coushatta, La.) has had an impressive start to his rookie season as he has a 3.60 ERA in two appearances, both starts, with two BB and eight K's in 10.0 IP. He started on the mound versus Huntingdon on opening weekend and worked five innings and allowed just one earned run and five hits with no walks and five strikeouts. He faced 20 batters and threw 69 pitches- 43 for strikes. Junior P Zachary Malone (Hallsville, Texas) has a 3.86 ERA in two appearances as he has worked 2.1 innings and freshman P Coen Laroux (Woodworth, La.) is 1-0 with a 2.70 ERA in two appearances. He has allowed just one earned run and three hits in 3.1 IP with two BB and four K's.
Centenary has won 12 games in a row over Austin College and is 36-2 all-time against the 'Roos. The Diamond Gents have been dominant at home recently as they are an impressive 61-21 at Shehee Stadium since the beginning of the 2021 season.
