The series between the Diamond Gents (2-1) and Bulldogs (0-0) was originally scheduled to begin with a single game on Friday evening at 6 p.m. followed by a DH on Saturday but due to expected inclement weather this weekend, the schedule was altered. A third and final game of the series will be attempted to be played on Saturday or Sunday weather permitting. TLU's season-opening DH versus Mary Hardin-Baylor at home on Tuesday was cancelled due to weather.
The Bulldogs and Diamond Gents met six times last season, with each team winning three games. TLU took two of three at home in the regular season and then the teams met three times in two days in the 2024 SCAC Tournament in Cleburne, Texas, an event won by Centenary.
Centenary defeated LaGrange College and Huntingdon College and fell to Rhodes College in the "Gents Classic" this past weekend to open their season. The Diamond Gents recorded an impressive 10-5 victory over LaGrange last Saturday and split with Huntingdon and Rhodes on Sunday. The opening weekend was a good test against strong competition as Rhodes was ranked 24th nationally in the D3baseball.com/NCBWA Preseason Top 25 poll while LaGrange was receiving votes.
The Diamond Gents hit .305 in their opening weekend with a .402 on-base percentage and slugged .411. Centenary banged out 29 hits and scored 14 runs, averaging 4.6 runs per game and finished with 13 hits, drew six walks, and had three extra-base hits in the season-opening victory over LaGrange. Centenary's pitching staff induced five double plays including three-consecutive inning-ending DP's in the games' first three frames as the Panthers left 12 men on base.
Senior LHP Tyler Herrera (Spring, Texas) started on the mound against LaGrange and picked up the win as he worked six innings and allowed two runs, both earned, on nine hits with three BB and four K. He faced 29 batters and threw 96 pitches (57 strikes).
Three Centenary relievers – junior P Zachary Malone (Hallsville, Texas), freshman P Roman Ardoin (Lumberton, Texas), and sophomore P Logan Schmidt (Pearland, Texas) worked the final three innings and allowed just three earned runs and six hits with no BB and two K's.
Freshman LF Brody Hebert (Houma, La.) had an impressive start to his collegiate career as the rookie was hit a pair of home runs and his .444 with a .583 OBP and slugged 1.111 for the weekend. Hebert totaled three RBI, scored two runs, walked three times, and stole a base. He hit a solo home run against LaGrange on Saturday and then belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning on Sunday against Huntingdon which proved to be the game-winner in a 2-1 Centenary win.
Freshman UT Tyler Hughes (Coushatta, La.) was impressive in his collegiate debut for the Diamond Gents on Sunday as he started on the mound versus Huntingdon and worked five innings and allowed just one earned run and five hits with no walks and five strikeouts. He faced 20 batters and threw 69 pitches- 43 for strikes.
Freshman IF Aron Gillum (Shreveport, La.) hit .462 (6-13) with four RBI, sophomore 1B Alex Miller (Cypress, Texas) was 5-12 (.417) with an RBI, and sophomore UT Gage Morris (Livingston, Texas) and sophomore DH Walker Wicklund (Shreveport, La.) each finished with four hits and senior IF Jobee Boone (Opelousas, La.) collected two.
Centenary was picked to finish third in the league this season in the preseason coaches' poll while TLU was fourth, tied with Southwestern University. Trinity University has been tabbed as the favorite to take home the 2025 title, a season in which 11 teams make up the conference, the most since the 2012 season. Concordia (Texas), which enters its first year as a member of the SCAC, received three first-place votes and finished second in the preseason rankings.
Centenary has been picked to finish fourth or better in the conference in each of the last nine seasons. The Diamond Gents are the defending tournament champions after defeating the Bulldogs 9-5 in Cleburne, Texas last May.
A Glance at the Bulldogs:
TLU's head coach, in his second season, is Kyle Palmer
The Bulldogs finished 25-17 overall and 12-9 in SCAC play last season but lost consecutive games to the Diamond Gents in Cleburne last May, 10-8 in 11 innings and 9-5 in the title game. The teams met a third time, in the semifinals, as TLU won 5-2, but Centenary won the two that mattered most.
