The Gents (2-7, 0-1 SCAC) return to the court on Saturday for the first time in nearly a month after defeating the Millsaps College Majors by a score of 72-57 in a non-conference contest back on Dec. 13 at home in their most recent action.
Ozarks (9-1, 1-0 SCAC) cruised past Hendrix College by a score of 82-43 on Monday. The Gents and Eagles will meet for the second time this season after Centenary fell to Ozarks 89-78 on Dec. 4 at home in the conference opener for both teams. Ozarks leads the all-time series with Centenary 4-3.
The Gents are 0-3 in road/neutral contests this season while the Eagles are 3-0 at home. Ozarks has won eight games in a row overall and has not lost since Nov. 16 against Belhaven University.
The Gents were picked to finish fourth in the conference preseason poll while the Eagles were picked 10th. The conference is separated into two divisions this season – the Blue and the Gold. Ozarks is currently atop the Blue division, tied with the University of Dallas and the University of St. Thomas. Centenary is tied with Austin College and Colorado College as it seeks to even its conference record.
The top six teams in the conference will qualify for the SCAC Men's Basketball Tournament, which will be held February 28 through March 2 and hosted by University of Dallas in Irving, Texas. The winner of that event will earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The Gents are averaging 67.1 PPG, shooting 37.1 % from the floor, 26.4 % from beyond the arc, 74.3 % from the free-throw line, and average 31.1 rebounds/game.
Gents' Season Individual Statistical Leaders:
Scoring: Junior G Quentin Beverly (Katy, Texas) – 17.7 PPG
Rebounding: Senior F Jakobi Greenleaf (Houston, Texas) – 6.9 RPG
Assists: Senior G Craig Collier (North Little Rock, Ark.) – 2.4/game
Blocks: Greenleaf – 1.3/game
Steals: Freshman G Nicholas Addison (Cedar Hill, Texas) – 2.0/game
Beverly missed the first six contests of the season with an injury and has only played in three games and therefore has not played enough minutes to qualify among the conference's scoring leaders, but has come back strong as he scored 29 in his season debut against Ozarks last month in the first meeting between the teams. Beverly just missed tying his career-high of 30 points which he scored last season at home against the University of Dallas. He then scored eight points in 21 minutes against LeTourneau on Dec. 6 and scored 16 in the win over Millsaps.
Beverly finished 5-16 from beyond the arc in last month's meeting with Ozarks and his 16 3-point FG attempts are one shy of the all-time Gold Dome record of 17 by Trenton Smith on Jan. 13, 1992 against ETBU. He also finished 10-10 at the free-throw line and he becomes one of just 13 players in program history to finish perfect at the line with a minimum of 10 attempts in games played at the Gold Dome and the first since James Sapp in 2014.
Collier is second on the team in scoring at 13.4 PPG and ranks in the top 20 in the league. He has scored in double figures five time this season and topped 20 points four times. He scored a career-high 29 points in the Gents' 75-64 win over Texas College at home on Nov. 12. Collier also ranks second in the league in free-throw percentage (90.6 %) as he is an impressive 29-32 at the line this season and in the top 30 nationally and is eighth in the conference in 3-point FG made as he has 18 treys this season and averages 2.0 per game.
Greenleaf (9.8 PPG) is fourth on the team in scoring and is eighth in the league in rebounding, 14th in FG % (51.9 %), tied for sixth in steals, and tied for second in blocked shots. He has reached double figures four times and has one double-double. Senior G Jalen Ned (New Orleans, La.) is averaging 11.4 PPG, third-best on the team and good for top-30 in the league, with five double-digit scoring performances and has reached 20 points twice.
Addison, in addition to his team-best 2.0 steals per game which ranks fourth in the conference, is sixth on the team in scoring (7.1 PPG) and averages 4.7 rebounds/game and 1.2 assists/game. He is also tied for eighth in the conference with 0.8 blocked shots per game. Freshman G Trenton Thomas (Cedar Hill, Texas) is averaging 6.8 PPG and freshman G Sirwilliam McDuffie (Houston, Texas) averages 5.1 PPG and has a pair of double-digit scoring performances this season.
