Gents Lose To Trinity On Saturday
The Centenary men's basketball team fell 76-68 to the Trinity University Tigers on Saturday evening in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest inside the Bell Center.
San Antonio, Texas – The Centenary men's basketball team fell 76-68 to the Trinity University Tigers on Saturday evening in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest inside the Bell Center.
The Gents (6-13, 4-6 SCAC) led the Tigers (16-3, 9-1 SCAC) by a point at halftime, but were outscored 46-37 after halftime to lose their fifth game in a row and fall to 1-6 on the road this season. Centenary lost 75-59 at Schreiner University on Friday while Trinity, winners of 10 games in a row, defeated the University of the Ozarks by a score of 69-63 at home on Friday and the Tigers are now 7-1 at home this season.
The Gents shot 42.4 % (25-59) from the floor, 8-26 (30.8 %) from beyond the arc, and 10-13 from the free-throw line for 76.9 %. The Tigers finished 26-64 from the floor for 40.6 %, 9-19 from beyond the arc for 47.4 % and 15-21 at the FT line (71.4 %). Centenary tallied 13 assists, eight steals, and five blocked shots and Trinity recorded eight assists, seven steals, and did not block a shot.
Trinity edged Centenary 28-26 in points in the paint and outrebounded the Gents 46-31. The Tigers had 19 bench points to the Gents' 15, scored 12 points off of Centenary's 14 turnovers, and finished with a 15-5 advantage in second-chance points. Trinity turned the ball over 16 times which led to 10 Centenary points, and the Gents finished with a slight edge (11-9) in fast break points.
Senior G Jalen Ned (New Orleans, La.) scored a team-best 18 points and was joined in double figures by junior G Quentin Beverly (Katy, Texas) who scored 16. Ned played 34 minutes and was 5-9 from the floor, 2-2 from beyond the arc, and 6-6 at the FT line with six rebounds and one assist as he reached double figures for the ninth time this season. Beverly, who led the Gents with 17 points on Friday at Schreiner, notched his 10th double-figure scoring performance of the season. He played all 40 minutes and finished 5-16 from the floor, 4-13 from beyond the arc, and 2-3 at the FT line with five rebounds, two steals, and a blocked shot.
Senior G Craig Collier (North Little Rock, Ark.) scored nine points as he also played 40 minutes and was 4-14 from the floor with one trey and two rebounds with three assists and three steals. Senior F Jakobi Greenleaf (Houston, Texas) and freshman G Trenton Thomas (Cedar Hill, Texas) each scored eight points, freshman G Nicholas Addison (Cedar Hill, Texas) had seven, and senior G Kyron Powell (Fort Worth, Texas) had two.
Greenleaf was 4-5 from the floor with four rebounds, five assists, a blocked shot, and a steal in 28 minutes, Thomas was 3-8 from the floor, 1-5 from beyond the arc, and 1-2 at the FT line in 27 minutes with five boards, four assists, and a pair of blocked shots. Addison played 19 minutes and was 3-6 from the floor and 1-2 at the FT line with seven rebounds, a blocked shot and a steal and Powell played 12 minutes and had a steal and made his only FG attempt.
Jacob Harvey led all scorers with 22 points for the Tigers and Ty Williams joined him in double figures with 18. Dean Balo had eight, Jacob Millhouse scored seven, Rob Congrad six, and five Tigers combined to score 15 points. Williams grabbed a team-best six rebounds and Braxton Barry and Zach Fenn each had five.
The first half featured multiple ties and lead changes and the largest lead by either team was five by Centenary on two occasions – 27-22 and 29-24. The Gents broke a 22-22 tie with an Addison jumper at the 4:46 mark to make it 24-22 and they led the rest of the way until halftime. A FT by Addison and a jumper by Ned made it 27-22 at the 3:20 mark and after a layup by Conrad, Ned answered with one to make it a 29-24 game at the 2:18 mark. Two FT's by Ned gave the Gents a 31-27 lead with 34 seconds left before the half and a trey by the Tigers' Max Sprott with just 11 seconds left in the half made it 31-30.
Harvey nailed four 3-pointers in the first six minutes of the second half as the Tigers started the half on a 20-9 run to take a 50-40 lead at the 14:40 mark. The Tigers' lead grew to 69-54 following a Conrad basket at the 5:23 mark and Trinity was able to maintain a comfortable lead for the majority of the second half to secure the home win.
The Gents will return home and play their next four games, all in SCAC play, in the Gold Dome. Centenary faces Concordia University and McMurry University next weekend and then Colorado College and the University of St. Thomas the weekend of Feb. 14-16.
