Four Gents - Junior G Quentin Beverly (Katy, Texas), senior G Craig Collier (North Little Rock, Ark.), senior F Jakobi Greenleaf (Houston, Texas), and freshman G Nicholas Addison (Cedar Hill, Texas) earned spots on the 2024-25 All-SCAC Men's Basketball Team.
IRVING, Texas – In exclusive voting by the head coaches and sports information directors of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC), senior center Kamden Ross of Schreiner University was selected SCAC Men's Basketball Player-of-the-Year for the second consecutive year while the University of St. Thomas staff, led by head coach Anthony Medina, earned SCAC Coaching Staff-of-the-Year honors. Complete Release
Ross was also awarded the league's Defensive Player-of-the-Year award for the second straight year, and first year forward Jared Robins of Southwestern was tabbed the league's First-Year Player-of-the-Year.
Ross, a native of Cibolo, Texas, currently leads the league in scoring (22.6 points per game) and is second in rebounding (11.8 rebounds per game) heading into this weekend's conference tournament. The reigning SCAC Player-of-the-Year, Ross broke the SCAC career rebounding record on Nov. 22 against University of Texas-Dallas and pulled down his 1,000th career rebound a month later against Trinity. The owner of three of the four highest single season rebounding totals in conference history, Ross has 1,186 career boards heading into this weekend's conference tournament for a career average of 11.19, the highest in league history. Ross is also third all-time in conference history in points scored with 1,709 for a career scoring average of 16,12. The all-American is also second in the conference this season in field goal percentage at 62.2 percent and his career mark of 62.4 percent would place him third all-time in league history in that category. In addition to his board work, Ross proved his worth on the defensive end with 40 blocks (second in the SCAC), giving him 151 for his career (ninth all-time in SCAC history). His 36 steals this season are tied for seventh in the conference. A four-time SCAC Player-of-the-Week during the season, his 17 double-doubles this season tied for the league lead and was good for a tie for sixth-best in all of NCAA Division III.
Ross' second consecutive selection as SCAC Player-of-the-Year marks the fourth time a men's player from Schreiner has earned the honor, following AJ Myres in 2013-14 and Keenan Gumbs in 2017-18, and he is the league's first back-to-back POTY recipient since Centenary's Jonathan Blount in 2012-13 and 2013-14. Additionally, Ross is just the second player in league history to be named Player-of-the-Year and Defensive Player-of-the-Year in the same season, joining Myres who earned both honors in 2013-14, but the only one to pull off the POTY/DPOTY sweep twice.
Ross received 15 votes in the Player-of-the-Year balloting followed by junior guard Angel Johnson of University of St. Thomas, who had seven votes. Senior forward Jack Boyle of University of Dallas received the remaining two first-place votes.
In the Defensive POTY vote, Ross received seven first-place nods, followed closely by Johnson of St. Thomas with six votes and Boyle of Dallas with five. Junior guard Zach Fenn of Trinity picked up three first-place votes and senior forward Devin Philio of Colorado College had two. Junior guard James Mathews of University of the Ozarks was listed on one ballot.
Southwestern's Robins, a first-year forward from Austin, Texas, paced all league freshmen in scoring – both for the season (9.2 points per game) and in conference-only games (10.9 points per game) – and was second in rebounding among first-years, corralling 4.8 boards per contest in the Pirates' 16 conference games. He made 46 three-pointers this season (11th in the SCAC), including 36 in league play, which put him in the Top 10 among all conference players. He also contributed defensively for the Pirates with 15 steals and 12 blocks in conference play, with the latter ranking seventh among all SCAC players. Robins is the first Southwestern men's basketball player to earn First-Year POTY recognition in the 26-year history of the award.
An honorable mention all-SCAC selection, Robins earned 10 votes from the coaches and sports information directors in the balloting for First-Year Player-of-the-Year. Centenary College first-year guard Nicholas Addison and St. Thomas first-year guard/forward Nathan Kongolo each picked up five first-place votes while McMurry University first-year guard Gervai Maeweather received a pair of first-place nods. First-year forward Will Bronson of Trinity and first-year guard Jonah Johnson of Texas Lutheran picked up one vote each.
In his 10th season at St. Thomas, head coach Anthony Medina has compiled a 185-83 record (.690), which includes this year's squad that went 15-1 in league play, is currently 23-2 overall and ranked 22nd in the nation by D3hoops.com and has earned the top seed from the Blue Division for the SCAC Basketball Tournament. A UST grad and just the second head coach in program history, Medina has quickly established his program as a conference force as St. Thomas has won the regular season/division title four of the last five years (excluding the 2020-21 COVID season) and is seeking its third tournament title over that same stretch. In his six years in the SCAC, Medina has posted a league mark of 80-12, giving him, among those with five plus years of coaching experience in the conference, the highest SCAC winning percentage (.870) of any men's coach in league history.
St. Thomas' and Medina's selection as part of the Coaching Staff-of-the-Year recognition represents the third time he has been honored by his coaching peers, having previously won the award in 2022-23 and in 2020-21, when he shared COTY honors with Jimmy Smith of Trinity.
