The Ladies (2-2) are coming off two impressive wins after opening the season 0-2. Centenary registered a thrilling 1-0 double-overtime victory over the St. Thomas Celts last Friday in Houston which was preceded by a 2-1 win over Alcorn State on the road on Sept. 8. That win marked the first time that the Ladies have defeated a Division I opponent in the current division III era (2011-present). Belhaven (2-1) fell to Huntingdon College by a score of 2-1 last Saturday at home in its most recent match.
Centenary has now allowed one goal or less in 14 of their last 16 matches over the last two seasons. The Ladies and Celts battled for 90 scoreless minutes in regulation and a 10-minute overtime period last Friday until junior F Avery Gilbert (League City, Texas) found the net midway through the second OT to give the Ladies the road win. Junior MF Ariel Muller (Groves, Texas) was credited with the assist. The goal was Gilbert's first this season and fifth of her career while Muller recorded her second-career assist.
Senior GK Avery Sanderson (McKinney, Texas) played the entire match and made one save, earning her first shutout this season and third of her career. Centenary was aggressive all night on offense and finished with a decisive 17-7 advantage in shots, including a 4-0 edge in the two overtime periods. Sanderson currently ranks fourth in the league in goals against average (1.79) and is eighth in save percentage (.400).
The Ladies and Blazers are meeting for the first time since Aug. 31, 2019 when Centenary claimed a 3-2 double overtime win on the road. The Maroon and White lead the all-time series between the two teams, 3-0. Centenary has won 13 of its last 18 games at home.
The Ladies wrap up the weekend on Sunday as they square off with the Comets of UT Dallas in a match scheduled for 3 p.m.
