Ladies Fall To ETBU in Home Opener, 3-1

Shreveport - The Centenary women's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to the East Texas Baptist University Tigers in its home opener on Monday evening in a non-conference contest at Mayo Field.

The Ladies (0-2) will have to quickly regroup as they head back on the road to face Alcorn State University on Wednesday in a non-conference match set for 5 p.m. in Lorman, Miss. Centenary fell 5-0 at Southern in its season opener last Friday in Baton Rouge, La.

ETBU (2-0) scored first in Monday's match as Aaliyah Casas found the net off an assist from Brianna Mickshaw 11 minutes into the contest. That lead held until halftime and then Centenary senior MF Gabby McDonald (Pasadena, Texas) tied the match at 1-1 just eight minutes into the second half as she received a pass near the right sideline from fellow senior MF Veronica Dougherty  (McAllen, Texas) and rifled the ball into the far left corner of the net past ETBU goalkeeper Claire Montondon for the tying score. The goal was McDonald's first of the season and seventh of her career. The First-Team All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference performer scored four last season.

The Tigers however answered that score just over a minute later as Sarah Ramos found the net with the assist credited to teammate Olivia Gallegos for the 2-1 lead. Mickshaw then padded the ETBU lead in the 73rd minute with a goal off two passes from teammates Raegan Kappler and Alana Coulter for the 3-1 final score. Centenary GK, freshman Madison Ersoff (Shreveport) played all 90 minutes and made eight saves. Montondon also went the distance for the Tigers and made three saves.

ETBU outshot the Ladies 24-6 and 11 shots on goal compared to just three for the Ladies. The Tigers also took six corner kicks while the Ladies took two. Centenary and ETBU were meeting for the fourth time but for the first time since the 2015 season when the Ladies opened the season with a 4-2 home win over the Tigers. Centenary, despite Monday's loss, is an impressive 13-5 at home over the last two seasons and the Maroon and White are 9-1 in their last 10 non-conference matches at home dating back to the 2017 season.
