Ladies Fall At Texas Lutheran On Friday, 1-0

Seguin, Texas- The Centenary women's soccer team fell 1-0 to the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs on Friday night at Gustafson Field.

The Ladies (2-5) were blanked for the third-consecutive contest while the Bulldogs improved to 2-4 with Friday's win. Centenary will wrap up its weekend road trip on Sunday as the Maroon and White face the Southwestern Pirates at Noon in Georgetown, Texas. TLU snapped its three-game losing streak and will face St. Thomas at home on Sunday.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the 19th minute as Savannah Rush found the net off the assist from teammate Brittany Casarez. TLU's defense then held the Ladies scoreless for the remainder of the match, led by its pair of goalkeepers, Charleigh Phipps and Madison Johnson. Phipps started and got the victory as she played a spotless first half and Johnson played the final 45 minutes and made two saves.

Texas Lutheran finished with an 18-7 advantage in shots including a 12-2 edge in the first half. The Bulldogs took six corner kicks to the Ladies' two, and the teams combined for 15 fouls. Centenary senior GK Avery Sanderson (McKinney, Texas) played the entire match and made seven saves.

Despite Fridays loss, the Ladies have still won six of their last eight non-conference road matches dating back to the 2019 season and Centenary has allowed one goal or less in 14 of its last 19 matches over the last two seasons. Friday's match did not count as a conference contest as SCAC play does not begin until next weekend.

Following Sunday's match at Southwestern, Centenary remains away from home next weekend to open conference play on Friday, Oct. 1 at Trinity in San Antonio, Texas followed by an Oct. 3 match at Schreiner in Kerrville, Texas. Centenary's next home match will be Friday, Oct. 8 versus St. Thomas at 5 p.m.
