Ladies Top Texas Lutheran 2-1 On Senior Day

Shreveport - The Centenary women's soccer team saved its best for last as the Ladies edged the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs 2-1 on Sunday afternoon on Senior Day in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest at Mayo Field.

The Ladies, playing their final regular-season match at home of the season, won for the first time at Mayo Field this season to improve to 3-9-2 overall and 1-2-2 in conference play. The Bulldogs fell to 4-9 and 1-3 in SCAC action with Sunday's loss. Centenary is an impressive 14-8-1 in its last 23 home matches.

Senior D Margot Frost (Prairieville, La.) made the most of her Senior Day as she scored her first-career goal, connecting in the 17th minute off an assist from fellow senior Gabby McDonald (Pasadena, Texas) to give the Ladies a 1-0 lead.

The Ladies extended their lead to 2-0 just before halftime as junior F Sydney Bascomb (Mesquite, Texas) rifled a shot into the net in the 41st minute past TLU GK Madison Johnson. The Bulldogs cut the Ladies' lead to 2-1 with a goal in the 81st minute as Brittany Casarez scored with Samantha Martinez assisting.

Centenary senior GK Avery Sanderson (McKinney, Texas) played all 90 minutes and recorded four saves. Johnson played the first half and made one save and Charleigh Phipps took over for the second half and held the Ladies scoreless without a save. The Bulldogs took 15 shots to seven for the Ladies and took three corner kicks but Centenary's stingy defense held TLU in check to record the win.

Seven seniors were honored in a postgame ceremony on the field with family and friends. Frost, McDonald, and Sanderson were all recognized along with D Kat Martinez (San Antonio, Texas), MF/F Riley Seeton (Frisco, Texas), D/MF Veronica Dougherty (McAllen, Texas), and MF Itzel Sigaran (Dallas, Texas).

The Ladies are off next weekend and will then finish the regular season on the road for a pair of SCAC matches at Austin College (Oct. 29 at 6 p.m.) and Dallas (Oct. 31 at Noon).
