Ladies Set To Face Southwestern And TLU This Weekend At Home
The Centenary women's soccer team will play its final two home matches of the regular season this weekend, beginning with a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest versus the Southwestern Pirates on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Mayo Field.
Shreveport - The Centenary women's soccer team will play its final two home matches of the regular season this weekend, beginning with a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest versus the Southwestern Pirates on Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Mayo Field.
The Ladies (2-8-2, 0-1-2 SCAC) dropped a 1-0 decision in overtime to the LeTourneau University YellowJackets on Sunday evening in non-conference play in Longview, Texas. Southwestern (10-1, 2-0 SCAC) enter Friday's contest on a four-game winning streak and beat Trinity 2-1 at home on Sunday. Centenary and Southwestern will meet for the second time this season after they squared off back on Sept. 26 in Georgetown, Texas in a match that did not count for conference as the Pirates recorded a 2-0 win. The Ladies are in search of their first win at Mayo Field this season as they are 0-3-1. Centenary is still an impressive 13-7-1 in its last 21 home matches.
The Centenary Women's Soccer program has joined forces with the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation's Vs. Cancer program this season to defeat childhood cancer – the deadliest disease affecting children in the United States. The Ladies' match versus Southwestern on Friday will be played in honor of children and teens who have experienced a pediatric brain tumor or cancer diagnosis. The Ladies played their third-straight overtime or double overtime match and fourth of the season on Sunday. Centenary, which earned a hard-fought 0-0 double-overtime tie on Oct. 8 versus the St. Thomas Celts in a SCAC contest at Mayo Field, also tied Schreiner 1-1 on Oct. 3 in Kerrville in double OT. Centenary previously defeated St. Thomas 1-0 back on Sept. 10 in Houston in double overtime.
The YellowJackets and Ladies battled for 90 minutes on Sunday and then just over two minutes into overtime, LeTourneau's Miranda Coffey scored off the assist from Kara Gipson. Centenary freshman GK Madison Ersoff (Shreveport) started and collected three saves. The Ladies finished the match with 10 shots to seven for LeTourneau and the Maroon and White also held a 9-5 edge in corner kicks.
Senior GK Avery Sanderson (McKinney, Texas) currently ranks second in the conference in saves (38), is tied for second with one shutout, is fifth in goals against average (1.91), and eighth in save percentage (.679). Junior F Sydney Bascomb (Mesquite, Texas) and senior Gabby McDonald D/MF (Pasadena, Texas) are tied for seventh in the SCAC in shots (20), while sophomore F Daisy Acosta (Deer Park, Texas) ranks ninth in the league in goals with two.
The Ladies face Texas Lutheran in their annual Senior Day match on Sunday, Oct. 17 at 2:30 p.m. Seven seniors will be honored in a postgame ceremony on the field.
