2023-24 Season Preview: Men's Golf

Temple, Texas - The Centenary men's golf team begins its 2023-24 season on Monday as the Gents are set to tee off in the UMHB Invitational hosted by the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor at Sammons Park Golf Course.

The Gents, led by longtime head coach Emlyn Aubrey, are joined in the field this week by the host Cru, Arlington Baptist University, Belhaven University, East Texas Baptist University, Howard Payne University, McMurry University, University of St. Thomas, the University of Texas at Dallas, and Trinity University.

The field will tee off at 8:30 a.m. on Monday at the par 70, 6,597-yard course and play 18 holes followed by the final 18 holes on Tuesday beginning at 9 a.m. Fans can watch live action of the tournament at www.cruathletics.com.

"We have mostly returners this year other than the addition of local Parkway High School standout, freshman Aubrey Snell (Shreveport, La.), who has been a superb addition to the team this season."

"We are looking to use last years' experience of our younger players to improve on our scores which will add a much-needed depth to the roster."

Senior Andrew Bennett (Bossier City, La.) is back to anchor the Gents' roster after tying for sixth place at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships last season, capping another solid season for the Maroon and White. Bennett finished in a three-way tie for sixth at 6-over par 222 as he fired a 2-under par 70 in the final round which was the lowest round shot for the day of all 42 players in the field. Bennett, who tied for 19th at the conference championships as a sophomore, now has one runner-up, a pair of top five finishes, and six top-10 finishes in his career. He earned Second-Team All-SCAC honors last season.

Sophomore Jeffrey Borchert (Katy, Texas) earned a top-20 finish at last season's conference championships as he finished 19th after shooting a 15-over par 231. He shot a final-round 3-over par 75 after he shot a 4-over par 76 in round one and an 8-over par 80 in the second round as he earned his best finish of the season in the event. Borchert competed in nine events last season while shooting an average score of 78.7 and earned a top-five finish in the Hendrix/Millsaps Tri-match.

Senior Devan Martin (Watson, La.) is back for a fifth season after he competed in nine events last season while shooting an average score of 84.11. He earned two top-40 finishes, and shot a season low 79 in three separate events. Martin was selected to the 2023 CSC All-District Academic Team, 2023 SCAC All-Sportsmanship Team, and both the Fall 2022 and Spring 2023 Dean's List.

Junior Tyler Jones (Stonewall, La.) competed in seven events last season while shooting an average score of 86.84. He shot a season-low 83 at three separate events with his best finish being at the SCAC Championships where he finished tied for 38th. Sophomore Hahn Bridges (Sterlington, La.) competed in five events last season while shooting an average score of 89.11. His best round of the season was an 83 which he shot in consecutive rounds of the West Region Invitational on April 3. Sophomore Colton Mayer (Heath, Texas) competed in six events as a rookie last season while shooting an average score of 90.11. He shot a low round of 79 in the second round at Mary Hardin-Baylor on September 27, 2022. Sophomore Parker Christensen (Castle Rock, Colo.) is back this season after he competed in one event - the Gents' annual home tournament, the Hal Sutton Invitational as he shot rounds of 122-131 to finish at 109-over par 253 to finish 55th.

The Gents' lineup this week will consist of Bennett, Snell, Borchert, Martin, Bridges, and Jones. Centenary wraps up its fall season in the UHV Fall Classic hosted by University of Houston-Victoria Oct. 16-17 in Victoria, Texas.
