Bennett's Fifth-Place Finish Highlights Gents' Play In Hal Sutton Invitational

Bossier City – The Centenary men's and women's golf teams wrapped up action in their annual home tournament, the Hal Sutton Invitational, on Tuesday at The Golf Club at Stonebridge.

Both the men's and women's field played 18 holes on Monday and the final 18 on Tuesday as the men were challenged by a par 72, 6,851-yard layout and the women tested by a par 72, 5,814-yard course.

The Gents shot a 58-over par 634 to finish seventh while the Ladies shot a 205-over par 781 to finish fourth. Senior Andrew Bennett (Bossier City, La.) led the way for the Gents as he finished fifth at 3-over par 147 and shot an even-par 72 in Tuesday's final round. Freshman Hailey Adams (Hamburg, Ark.) was the top finisher for the Ladies as she shot a 40-over par 184 to finish 16th.

Blinn College's "A" squad claimed the men's team title after shooting a 13-over par 589 and Tyler Junior College won the women's title after posting an 84-over par 660. Blinn's Jacob Holloway won the individual men's title at even-par 144 and Annie Piggott of Millsaps College won the women's individual title at 11-over par 155.

Freshman Aubrey Snell (Shreveport, La.) was the Gents' second-best finisher as he shot a 10-over par 154 to finish 13th, sophomore Jeffrey Borchert (Katy, Texas) finished at 19-over par 163 to place 34th, senior Devan Martin (Watson, La.) shot a 31-over par 175 to finish 43rd and tied with junior Tyler Jones (Stonewall, La.).

Snell shot an 11-over par 83 in Monday's first round but fired a team-best 1-under par 71 in Tuesday's final round. Bennett shot a 3-over 75 in round one and lowered his score by three strokes on Tuesday as he shot an even-par 72. Borchert shaved seven strokes off his score from Monday to Tuesday after shooting a round-one 85 he turned in a 6-over 78.

Martin shot 11 strokes better in Tuesday's final round, turning in an 11-over 83 after a 92 on Monday. Jones shot 87-88, Bridges shot a 98 both days, Mayer shot a 98 and then dropped eight strokes for a final-round 90, and Christensen shot seven shots better on Tuesday (106) after a 113 in round one.

Sophomore Hahn Bridges (Sterlington, La.), sophomore Parker Christensen (Castle Rock, Colo.), and sophomore Colton Mayer (Heath, Texas) all played as individuals. Mayer shot a 44-over par 188 to finish 46th, Bridges shot a 52-over par 196 to finish 48th, and Christensen shot a 75-over par 219 to finish 49th.

Freshman Mya Thompson (South Jordan, Utah) finished at 47-over par 191 in 23rd place, freshman Jordyn Templeton (Columbus, Texas) shot a 56-over 200 to finish 29th, sophomore Kaylee Roberts (Watonga, Okla.) shot a 62-over par 206 to finish 32nd, and freshman Mia Knox (Chicago, Ill.) finished 39th at + 241 – 385.

Adams shot a 19-over par 91 in the final round after a 93 on Monday, Thompson improved her score by 17 strokes, shooting a final-round 15-over par 87 after a 104 on Monday. Templeton improved by 12 shots from a 106 to a 94, Roberts shot a 103 each day, and Knox was 31 shots lower on Tuesday.

Blinn's "B" team and Mississippi University for Women tied for second place on the men's side at 34-over par 610, Tyler JC was fourth at 45-over 621, Louisiana Christian University finished fifth (47-over par 623), Jacksonville College placed sixth (50-over 626), and eight shots ahead of the Gents, Howard Payne University finished eighth at 60-over 636, and Belhaven University finished ninth at 117-over par 693.

Blinn College finished second on the women's side, 17 shots behind Tyler, at 105-over par 677. Mississippi University for Women finished third at + 163 – 735, McMurry University placed fifth at 217-over par 793, Jacksonville finished sixth (+ 238 – 814) and Weatherford College was seventh at + 266 – 842.

Holloway edged three of his teammates – Anthony Rubino, Cason Holzshu, and Preston DeSerrano, by two shots to claim the individual title as the trio finished in a three-way tie for second place at 2-over par 146. Bennett, who finished third in the Hal Sutton last season, finished three shots behind Holloway and recorded the fourth top-five finish of his career.

Next up for the Gents is The Shoals Intercollegiate held at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail's Fighting Joe Course April 14-16 in Florence, Ala.
