Bennett And Snell Each In Hunt for Individual Title At SCAC Championships

Whitney, Texas – Senior Andrew Bennett (Bossier City, La.) and freshman Aubrey Snell (Shreveport, La.) are second and third respectively after two rounds to help the Gents finish the day in a tie for fifth place at the 2024 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships on Monday on the New Course at White Bluff Golf Resort.

The men are being tested by a par-72, 6,918-yard course and the third and final round is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday. The weather forecast is favorable on Tuesday as the expected high is 78 degrees with sunny skies and minimal wind. The temperature is predicted to be cool overnight and in the high 50's as players tee off.

Bennett, who held the individual lead after Sunday's opening round, shot a 1-under 71 for the second day in a row and sits at 2-under par 142 and is one shot behind leader Jacob Mason of Trinity University, who shot a 5-under par 67 on Monday after a 2-over 74 on Monday and is at 3-under par 141 for the tournament. Snell, who shot a 3-over par 75 in round one to sit in a tie for 10th place, shot a 3-under 69 on Monday – the second-lowest round shot all day behind Mason's 67. The rookie Snell sits at even-par 144 for the tournament.

The Gents shot a 16-over par 304 on Monday, 13 shots lower than their 29-over par 317 in round one. Centenary's round two score was the second-lowest shot by the field, just four strokes higher than Trinity's 301.

Schreiner University, the leader after round one, continues to lead the field heading into Tuesday's final round as the Mountaineers shot an 11-over par 305 and are at 23-over par 599 overall. Trinity is in second place at 29-over par 605, the University of St. Thomas, the defending champion, is in third place at 34-over 610, Southwestern University, the designated host school for the three-day event, is in fourth place at 43-over par 619, and Texas Lutheran University is tied for fifth with the Gents at 45-over par 621. The University of Dallas is sixth at 46-over 622.

Senior Devan Martin (Watson, La.) shot a 7-over par 79 on Monday, seven shots lower than his round-one score on Sunday, and is in 31st place at 21-over par 165. Junior Tyler Jones (Stonewall, La.) shot a 19-over par 91 on Monday after a 13-over par 85 in round one and is tied for 33rd place at 32-over par 176 and sophomore Jeffrey Borchert (Katy, Texas) is in 35th place at 34-over par 178 after shooting rounds of 93-85.

Bennett was the Gents' top finisher last season in the event as he finished in a three-way tie for sixth place at 6-over par 222. He fired a 2-under par 70 in the final round last year which was the lowest round shot for the day of all 42 players in the field.

Bennett, who tied for 19th at the conference championships in 2022, earned Second-Team All-SCAC honors by virtue of his sixth-place finish last season. Bennett now has one individual win, two top-five finishes, and a top-15 finish this season and hopes to add a second win on Tuesday.

Former Gent Richard Polan owns the Gents' best all-time finish in the SCAC Championships as he placed third in the 2022 event in Blanco, Texas.
