Ladies Fall In Millsaps College Thanksgiving Classic Opener

Jackson, Miss. – The Centenary women's basketball team fell 67-51 in non-conference play to the Millsaps College Majors on Saturday afternoon in its opening contest of the Millsaps College Thanksgiving Classic at the Hangar Dome.

The Ladies (0-7) will face Birmingham-Southern College on Sunday at 1 p.m. Centenary is 3-8 all-time against Birmingham-Southern but defeated the Panthers 89-82 on the road last season. Live stats and live video are available for all of the games at the link below:

Centenary shot 31.1 % (19-61) from the floor for the game while the Majors (5-2) were slightly better at 36.2 % (21-58). The Ladies did not make a 3-point basket, missing all five of their attempts from beyond the arc, and finished 13-19 (68.4 %) from the free throw line. Millsaps was 6-28 from 3-point range for 21.4 % and 19-34 from the line for 55.9 %.

The Ladies finished with 37 rebounds, 12 steals, and eight assists. The Majors grabbed 44 rebounds with 12 steals, 10 assists, and blocked five shots. Centenary and Millsaps each turned the ball over 25 times. Each team scored 28 points in the paint and points scored off turnovers was nearly identical with the Ladies scoring 21 and the Majors 20.

Millsaps received a big boost from its bench as the Majors' reserves scored 36 points while the Ladies' bench chipped in 13. Millsaps scored 12 second-chance points to Centenary's four and the Ladies finished with an 8-0 advantage in fast break points. Millsaps raced out to a 19-5 lead after one quarter and finished with an 18-10 edge in the second period to lead 37-15 at the half.

The Ladies cut into the Majors' lead after halftime, scoring 11 to Millsaps' 14 and then outscored the Majors 25-16 in the fourth quarter, but could not make up for the large halftime deficit. Three Ladies reached double figures, led by a season-high 19 from freshman G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.). Senior F Amelia Bagwell (West Monroe, La.) scored 13 and freshman G Olivia Sepulvado (Zwolle, La.) notched a season-best 10 points.

Barrow was 6-13 from the floor and 7-8 from the free throw line in 32 minutes with seven rebounds and five steals. Bagwell was 6-12 from the field and played all 40 minutes. She grabbed 10 rebounds as she recorded her first career double-double. Sepulvado was 5-10 from the floor with five rebounds, an assist, and a steal. Alana Jones was an uncharacteristic 1-14 from the floor but she grabbed eight rebounds, matched Barrow with five steals, and had an assist.

Haley Franklin was the only Millsaps player to score in double figures as she posted 10, but six other Majors scored six or more points and 11 players scored in total. Ladies' sophomore G Alana Jones (Shreveport, La.) added four and freshman G Brailey Major (Opelousas, La.) and freshman G Lauren Castillo (Keller, Texas) each scored two points.

Freshman G TaNyjah Plumber (Kinder, La.) scored one point in six minutes off the bench as she finished 1-2 at the free throw line but grabbed three rebounds. Freshman G Madison Davis (Shreveport, La.) started and played 27 minutes and was held scoreless but she had a rebound and a pair of assists. Senior G Patience Bates (Houston, Texas) played four minutes and recorded an assist and was also held scoreless and freshman G Keyonna Armelin (New Iberia, La.) played three minutes but did not score.

Millsaps held a comfortable 51-26 lead entering the fourth quarter, but the Ladies did not fold as they held the Majors to just two points over the final three minutes of the game and doubled them up (15-7) over the final five minutes.
