Ladies Fall To Celts On Road, 68-57

Houston - The Centenary women's basketball team fell 68-57 to the University of St. Thomas Celts on Tuesday evening in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest at the Jerabeck Center.

The Ladies are now 3-21 overall and 3-12 in SCAC play while the Celts improved to 7-15 and 6-9 SCAC. St. Thomas swept the season series after recording a 75-66 over the Maroon and White last month in Shreveport.

Centenary finished 35.1 % (20-57) from the floor while St. Thomas shot 34.9 % (22-63). Both teams struggled from beyond the arc as the Ladies made just 1-9 attempts for 11.1 % and the Celts were 7-27 for 25.9 %. Centenary also struggled from the free throw line (16-27 for 59.3 %) while St. Thomas shot well, making 17-23 attempts for 73.9 %. The Ladies have now held half (12 of 24) of their opponents to 70 points or less in a game this season.

The Ladies outrebounded the Celts, 40-35, and tallied 11 assists, six steals, and two blocked shots. The Celts finished with 19 assists and 19 steals, but did not block a shot. Centenary turned the ball over 27 times while St. Thomas had 16 TO's. The Celts led 22-9 after the first quarter and outscored the Ladies 23-16 in the second period to hold a 45-25 halftime lead. Centenary finished with a 12-9 edge in a low-scoring third quarter and outscored St. Thomas 20-14 in the final period for a 32-23 advantage in the second half which cut into the Celts' large halftime advantage.

The Ladies finished with a 28-20 edge in points in the paint and had 15 second-chance points to six for the Celts. St. Thomas scored 20 points off of turnovers while the Ladies had 10, the Celts finished with a 16-4 edge in fast break points, and each team received 21 points from its bench.

Sophomore G Alana Jones (Shreveport, La.) led the Ladies with 13 points and was one of two players to reach double figures as she was joined by sophomore G Dymon Drumgo (Alexandria, La.) who scored 10 off the bench. Freshman G Brailey Major (Opelousas, La.) just missed double digits as she scored nine and the Ladies got seven each from freshman F Kyra Stokes (Shreveport, La.) and freshman G TaNyjah Plumber (Kinder, La.). Freshman F Makalyn Savoy (Opelousas, La.) added six.

Jones, who has reached double figures eight times this season, just missed a double-double as she grabbed nine rebounds and added an assist on 5-9 shooting in 31 minutes. She was 1-1 from beyond the arc and 2-2 at the FT line. Drumgo reached double figures for the sixth time in the last seven games and 11th time this season and finished with seven boards, two assists, and a steal in 24 minutes off the bench.

Major started and played 24 minutes and grabbed four rebounds with a pair of assists and a blocked shot, Stokes matched Jones with a team-high nine rebounds in her 22 minutes with a steal and a blocked shot, and Plumber played 28 minutes and was 3-3 from the FT line with a team-high four assists and added a steal. Savoy nearly matched her season high in points (8) as she came off the bench and made 3-4 shots in 10 minutes with one rebound.

Senior G Patience Bates (Houston, Texas) and freshman G Olivia Sepulvado (Zwolle, La.) each scored two and freshman G Madison Davis (Shreveport, La.) had one point. Freshman G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.) was uncharacteristically held scoreless but finished with four rebounds, two assists, and one steal in 20 minutes. Barrow entered the game averaging 8.3 PPG and has scored in double figures an impressive eight times this season.

Nia McGee led the Celts with a game-high 19 points and Ce'Briaya Bell joined her in double figures with 14. Amber Bourgeois and Rayvn Ellis combined for 13 and McGee grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

The Ladies will finish their regular season at Colorado College on Sunday, Feb. 19 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
