Ladies Drop 64-50 Decision At TLU On Saturday

Seguin, Texas – The Centenary women's basketball team dropped a 64-50 decision on Saturday afternoon to the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest at Memorial Gymnasium.

The Ladies (0-13, 0-4 SCAC) were only down six points with just over four minutes remaining in the game but the Bulldogs (7-4, 3-1 SCAC) went on an 11-3 run to end the game and seal the win. Centenary shook off a 70-38 loss on Friday at Southwestern as the Maroon and White were much more competitive on Saturday.

The Bulldogs held a slight edge, 18-16, after the first quarter and outscored the Ladies 10-8 in a low-scoring second period to lead 28-24 at halftime. TLU edged Centenary 17-15 in the third quarter and 19-11 in the final 10 minutes to win by double digits in a game that was close the whole way.

The Ladies shot just 27 % (17-63) overall from the floor, 5-17 from beyond the arc for 29.4 % and finished 11-16 from the free throw line for 68.8 %. The Bulldogs shot 37.7 % (23-61) from the field but struggled from 3-point range (4-17 for 23.5 %) and the free throw line (14-24 for 58.3 %).

Centenary won the rebounding battle, 46-43, and finished with nine assists, five steals, and a blocked shot while TLU tallied 13 assists, 10 steals, and blocked eight shots. The Ladies turned the ball over 15 times while the Bulldogs gave it away just eight times. The Bulldogs scored 14 points off of TO's to eight for the Ladies. TLU finished with a 30-18 edge in points in the paint, 27-17 in bench points, 13-5 in fast break points, and the Ladies edged the Bulldogs 13-12 in second-chance points.

Freshman F Kyra Stokes (Shreveport, La.) scored a season-high 16 points and grabbed a season-best 12 rebounds for her first-career double-double in just her fifth game of the season. Stokes, who scored eight points on Friday against Southwestern in her first action in over a month, played 34 minutes and was 7-12 from the floor with two steals, an assist, and a blocked shot.

Sophomore G Alana Jones (Shreveport, La.) joined Stokes in double figures with 11 points and grabbed seven rebounds in 38 minutes. She was 7-8 at the free throw line and had four assists and one steal. Freshman G Madison Davis (Shreveport, La.) came off the bench and scored eight points in 25 minutes on 2-5 shooting. She grabbed one rebound, went 2-2 from the free throw line, and hit a pair of treys.

Freshman G Brailey Major (Opelousas, La.) scored five points and pulled down three rebounds in her 20 minutes and freshman G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.) scored four points and had four rebounds with an assist in 22 minutes. Freshman G Jillian Peacock (West Monroe, La.) and freshman G TaNyjah Plumber (Kinder, La.) each scored three points and senior F Amelia Bagwell (West Monroe, La.) was held scoreless but grabbed four rebounds and had an assist in 20 minutes. Peacock also had four rebounds in her 16 minutes and hit one trey with one assist. Plumber grabbed three rebounds with two steals and an assist in 21 minutes and was 1-3 from beyond the arc.

Kailee Mulkey was the lone Bulldog in double figures as she scored 16 with three rebounds, two assists, and two steals in 28 minutes. She was 5-13 from the floor, 5-8 from the FT line and hit one trey. Four Bulldogs scored six or more points and 12 players scored in all. Sydney Shaw and Brianna Wilson each grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

TLU extended its four-point halftime lead to 43-29 with 3:45 remaining in the third quarter but the Ladies finished the period on a 10-2 run to trail by only six (45-39) headed into the final 10 minutes. A pair of free throws by Jones cut the Ladies' deficit to 53-47 with 4:04 left but TLU held the Maroon and White without a point over the next two minutes to increase its lead to 12 at 59-47. Stokes made a free throw at the 2:00 mark to make it 59-48 but the Bulldogs made several clutch free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.

The Ladies will now break for Christmas and return to action for a pair of home conference games, on Friday, Dec. 30 against the University of Dallas (4 PM) and Saturday, Dec. 31 versus Austin College at 1 PM.
