Brownwood, Texas- The Centenary women's soccer team was blanked 2-0 on Saturday evening by the Howard Payne University Lady Jackets in a non-conference contest at Citizens National Bank Soccer Field.
The Ladies (1-5-2) lost for the first time since falling 2-0 to Sul Ross State on Sept. 10 after defeating Belhaven 1-0 at home on Sept. 12 and earning consecutive scoreless ties against Birmingham-Southern (Sept. 15) and Millsaps (Sept. 17). Howard Payne improved to 4-4 on the season after its second match in three days following a 1-0 loss at home to Austin College on Thursday.
The teams played to a scoreless first half until Howard Payne's Madison Nance scored an unassisted goal in the 63rd minute for a 1-0 lead. A mere 47 seconds later, the Yellow Jackets struck again as Brenna Douthit scored off an assist from Alexandria Barnett for a 2-0 lead.
Junior GK Madison Ersoff (Shreveport, La.) went the distance for the Ladies and made five saves. Ersoff, named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, was scored upon for the first time in four matches. She recorded five+ saves for the sixth time this season. Howard Payne played a pair of goalkeepers as Emily Williamson started and played the first half and did not record a save. Chandler Sorrell played the second half and made one save to pick up the victory.
The Yellow Jackets finished with a decisive advantage in shots, 17-3, and too six corner kicks to just one for the Ladies. The Ladies were whistled for seven fouls and the Yellow Jackets were called for three.
Centenary will next face LeTourneau University on Tuesday, Sept. 26 in Longview, Texas and then play three-straight home matches from Sept. 30-Oct. 8.
