Baseball Sweeps A Pair On Saturday In  Millsaps Invitational To Finish Unbeaten Weekend

Jackson, Miss. – The Centenary baseball team swept a pair of games on Saturday in the Millsaps Invitational, defeating Edgewood by a score of 15-3 and blanking Eureka College, 12-0, in its second game to finish a perfect 3-0 in the weekend tournament at Twenty Field.

The Gents (7-1) opened play in the Millsaps Invitational on Friday with a 6-5 walk-off victory over Edgewood. Centenary was down 5-4 entering the ninth inning and scored the tying run on a wild pitch with one out and then a sacrifice fly by junior Peyton Cormane (Pineville, La.) scored redshirt freshman Ben Bridges (Beckville, Texas) with the winning run.

Senior right-hander Matthew Devillier (Lake Charles, La.) started for the Gents in game one against Edgewood and pitched six innings, throwing 99 pitches and allowed just one run (earned) and four hits. He walked just two and struck out seven to improve to 3-0 on the season. Four Gents pitchers pitched in relief as senior Cullen Sharkey (Bossier City, La.), junior Connor Cudd (Lake Charles, La.), freshman Sean McVittie (Allen, Texas), and junior Brock Yates (Bellaire, Texas) followed Devillier.

Centenary trailed 1-0 entering the sixth inning and erupted for eight runs in the inning and added seven runs in its final three at bats to cruise to the victory. The Gents collected 17 hits and four players had multi-hit games led by junior Preston Ludwick's (Pflugerville, Texas) 4-5 effort with two runs, two RBI, and a walk. Four Gents also had at least two RBI led by short stop Peyton Cormane's (Pineville, La.) three RBI.

The Gents opened up a 5-0 lead after four innings in game two and scored fifth runs in the eighth to put the finishing touches on their second blowout win of the day. Senior Cody Crowder (Shepherd, Texas) went 3-5 with four RBI and two runs scored to lead the offense. Ludwick (1-1) started and picked up the win as he pitched six shutout innings and allowed just four hits and did not walk a batter while striking out five.

The Gents will stay on the road following this weekend's trip to Mississippi as Centenary heads west to face Cal Lutheran (Feb. 26), Occidental (Feb. 28), Whittier College twice on Feb. 29, and the University of La Verne (March 1) all in the Los Angeles area.

Centenary faces Louisiana College again in a makeup game on Monday, March 9 in Pineville (game originally scheduled for Feb. 14). The Gents then open SCAC play at home March -14 against Trinity for a three-game series.
