Baseball Heads to California For Five Game Road trip

Thousand Oaks, Calif. – The Centenary baseball team is back on the road this week as the Gents play their first of five games in the state of California on Wednesday as they face Cal Lutheran at 2:30 p.m. (4:30 p.m. central time).

The Gents are off to an impressive 7-1 start to the season while the Kingsmen enter Wednesday's contest at 9-0-1. Centenary swept a pair of games on Saturday in the Millsaps Invitational in Jackson, Miss., defeating Edgewood College by a score of 15-3 and blanking Eureka College, 12-0, in its second game to finish a perfect 3-0 in the weekend tournament. Centenary last started a season 7-1 in 2017.

The Maroon and White opened play in the Millsaps Invitational on Friday with a 6-5 walk-off victory over Edgewood. Centenary was down 5-4 entering the ninth inning and scored the tying run on a wild pitch with one out and then a sacrifice fly by junior Peyton Cormane (Pineville, La.) scored redshirt freshman Ben Bridges (Beckville, Texas) with the winning run. Senior right-hander Matthew Devillier (Lake Charles, La.) started for the Gents in game one against Edgewood and pitched six innings, throwing 99 pitches and allowed just one run (earned) and four hits. He walked just two and struck out seven to improve to 3-0 on the season.

The Gents collected 17 hits in the game two blowout win over Edgewood as four players had multi-hit games led by junior Preston Ludwick's (Pflugerville, Texas) 4-5 effort with two runs, two RBI, and a walk. Four Gents also had at least two RBI led by Cormane''s three RBI. Senior Cody Crowder (Shepherd, Texas) went 3-5 with four RBI and two runs scored to lead the offense. Ludwick (1-1) started and picked up the win as he pitched six shutout innings and allowed just four hits and did not walk a batter while striking out five.

Centenary will face Occidental (Feb. 28), Whittier College twice on Feb. 29, and the University of La Verne (March 1) all in the Los Angeles area this weekend.

The Gents then face Louisiana College again in a makeup game on Monday, March 9 in Pineville (game originally scheduled for Feb. 14) and open SCAC play at home March 13-14 against Trinity for a three-game series.
