Los Angeles, Calif. – The Centenary baseball team dropped a 4-1 decision to the Occidental College Tigers on Friday afternoon at Anderson Field.

The Gents (7-3) were playing their second of five games in the state of California after dropping a 16-4 decision at Cal Lutheran on Wednesday. Occidental improved to an even 5-5 with the win.

Occidental took a 2-0 lead after three innings on an RBI ground out and a run-scoring single. The Gents cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth on a solo home run by junior Tyler Welch (Pineville, La.) to make it a 2-1 game. The Tigers however got a run back in their half of the fourth on a solo home run to extend the lead to 3-1. Occidental then added a sacrifice fly in the sixth to make it a 4-1 ballgame.

Senior right fielder Cody Crowder (Shepherd, Texas), and junior second baseman (Houston, Texas) each collected two hits to lead the Gents' offense. Senior right-hander Matthew Devillier (Lake Charles, La.) took the loss for the Gents to fall to 3-1 on the season as he allowed four runs, all earned, on five hits in six innings of work. He threw 102 pitches, 66 for strikes, and walked three and struck out five.

Nolan McCarthy got the win on the mound for the Tigers as he went six innings and allowed just one earned run, the Welch solo shot, and five hits. He struck out four and did not walk a batter while throwing just 84 pitches, 62 for strikes.

Centenary will face Whittier College on Saturday in a doubleheader with game one scheduled for 1 p.m. and game two to follow at 4:30 p.m. The Gents then wrap up the road trip with a game against the University of La Verne on Sunday, March 1.
