Chrys Jackson, Centenary College, Men's Basketball - Character & Community

CHRYS JACKSON OF CENTENARY COLLEGE, a senior guard on the men's basketball team from North Las Vegas, Nev., has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Character and Community Male Student Athlete of the Week for the week beginning November 13.

The SCAC Character & Community award honors the efforts of student-athletes who excel in the field of athletics, and also serve their campus and community.

Chrys is quiet by nature, but speaks loudly in many ways. A prominent campus leader, Chrys transferred to Centenary from Oxnard College and has played in 20 career games for the Gents.

Among the many extracurricular activities that Chrys participates, he is head of the Centenary Student Section, head of Social Media and Student Engagement, head of photography for the campus newspaper and serves as the photographer for Centenary athletics.

"I manage and balance being both a student and a college athlete at the same time by controlling only what I can," said Jackson. "I cannot control how much work my teacher gives or how hard my team expects me to practice. What I can control is how seriously I take my sleep habits and my diet."

Chrys also represents his team on Centenary's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and is a fixture at various other athletic events on campus each fall, winter, and spring, helping cheer on his fellow Ladies and Gents.

"Centenary was the only school where I could continue my basketball playing journey," said Jackson. "Basketball has helped me off the court by showing me how to work in a group setting. I've learned how important it is to hold yourself accountable before mentioning the next person. Student life has helped me in my basketball career because I take it upon myself to give my classmates something to talk about when I see them after the game."

"Chrys is a first-class leader," said Centenary head coach Chris Dorsey. "He is a huge piece of our on-court success."

"Chrys is the voice of our program and keeps our team organized, focused and energetic on a daily basis. Off the court, I consider him the big-man on campus. He's involved in several extracurricular activities within the campus community, is a great student, while also serving the Shreveport community every chance he can get. He's a student-athlete in the truest sense of the word. This recognition is well-deserved for him.

"It means the world to be featured for the SCAC Character and Community Award," continued Jackson. "It shows me that my integrity and character don't go overlooked."
