Shreveport - The Centenary men's basketball team has been selected as Centenary Athletics' "Team of the Week" after the Gents finished 2023 on a high note with a hard-fought 77-71 victory over the Colorado College Tigers on Sunday afternoon in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest on New Year's Eve inside the Gold Dome.
The Gents (7-6, 2-2 SCAC) raced out to a 38-24 halftime lead and fended off the Tigers (6-5, 2-2 SCAC) to improve to 4-0 on their home court this season. Colorado College outscored the Maroon and White in the second half, 47-39, but came up short as the Gents won for the 39th time in their last 47 home games. Centenary has now won five of the last seven games between the two teams and improved to 15-2 in its last 17 home games.
Sunday's contest was a showcase of two of the league's top teams as the Tigers were picked to finish third in the SCAC preseason poll while the Gents were predicted to finish fifth. Centenary, the only SCAC program to advance to four-straight tournament semifinals, will host the 2024 SCAC Tournament Feb. 23-25 at the Gold Dome. The Tigers posted their most wins (12) since 2017-18 last year. The top six teams in the standings at the conclusion of the regular season qualify for the event.
The Gents will remain at home for a pair of league contests next weekend – Friday, Jan. 5 versus Texas Lutheran University (5:30 p.m.) and on Sunday, Jan. 7 against Southwestern University (Noon).
