Gents Open Season With 0-0 Double Overtime Tie Versus Hendrix

Conway, Ark. - The Centenary men's soccer team played the Hendrix College Warriors to a scoreless double-overtime draw in its season opener on Friday night at Warrior Soccer Field on day one of the 2021 Hendrix Invitational. 

The Gents (0-0-1) will face Rhodes College on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 11 a.m. to finish up play in the weekend event. Hendrix (0-0-1) will face UT Dallas on Sunday at 2 p.m. Rhodes defeated UT Dallas 3-1 on Friday.

Centenary is now 4-3-1 all-time versus the Warriors. 

The match was statistically close as one might imagine based on the final result, as Hendrix took 15 total shots to 14 for the Gents. The Warriors had three shots on goal while Centenary finished with six. The Gents held a sizable advantage in corner kicks (9-1) but could not find the net. The teams combined for 28 fouls and even yellow cards, five by the Warriors. 

Centenary senior GK Sami Borchalli (Lafayette, La.) played all 110 minutes and made three saves as he recorded his 10th-career shutout. Hendrix played a pair of goalies, as Manu Murga started and played the first half, and recorded one save. James Leone played the second half and the two overtime periods and made five saves. 

Hendrix was led by Zack Roberts' four shots and three each from Eli Brizendine and Omar Pelayo. Junior MF Jaron Petreas (Denton, Texas) was one of four Gents with two shots each to lead the way as he was joined by junior MF Colton Howard (Keller, Texas), junior MF Marco Basteris (Katy, Texas), and sophomore D/MF Michael Smith (Baton Rouge, La.). Both of Howard's shots were on goal.
