Gents Return Home to Face St. Thomas In Key SCAC Match

Shreveport- The Centenary men's soccer team finally returns home after four-consecutive matches on the road as the Gents are set to face the St. Thomas Celts on Friday night in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference match scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Mayo Field.

The Gents (3-6-1, 0-2 SCAC) and Celts (5-2-2, 1-0 SCAC) are meeting for the first time since the 2020 SCAC Championship match last April when the Gents edged the Celts in PK's last to win the tournament title on their home field. Centenary fell 1-0 in overtime at Trinity last Friday on the road in its conference opener in Sa Antonio while St. Thomas blanked Schreiner, 4-0 in Kerrville, Texas. The Gents then fell to Schreiner 3-0 on Sunday while the Celts lost a double-overtime heartbreaker, 3-2 to Trinity, on Sunday. Centenary has now been held scoreless in three-consecutive matches after falling 2-0 on Sept. 26 at Southwestern.

Senior GK Sami Borchalli (Lafayette, La.) played all 90 minutes in Sunday's 3-0 loss and allowed the three goals and made one save. The Mountaineers took a 2-0 lead into the half after goals by Mason Lubbe and Zaaron Gonzales in the fifth and 12th minutes respectively. Iseah Hernandez assisted on Lubbe's goal and Charlie Din was credited with the assist on the second goal by Gonzales. Din added a goal in the 65th minute for the 3-0 final margin. Schreiner finished with a slight edge (13-12) in shots while the Gents held a decisive advantage in corner kicks (8-3) but could not capitalize. The teams combined for 19 fouls and three yellow cards were issued in the match.

Borchalli currently ranks third in the league in saves with 34 and seventh in GAA (1.55). He is also sixth in save percentage (.739) and is second in the SCAC in shutouts with two. Junior MF Jaron Petreas (Denton, Texas) and sophomore Michael Smith (Baton Rouge, La.) each took three shots to lead the Gents' offense. Petreas is tied for sixth in the conference in shots with 24. Senior MF Cole Schultz (Denham Springs, La.) is tied for 10th in the SCAC with two assists.

Centenary will face LeTourneau in a non-conference match in Longview, Texas on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. The Gents are then back home for three-straight matches versus Southwestern (Oct. 15), Texas Lutheran (Oct. 17) and Colorado College (Oct. 22) for their final home match on Senior Night.
