Gents Fall To Southwestern 1-0 On Friday

Shreveport - The Centenary men's soccer team fell 1-0 to the Southwestern University Pirates in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference match on Friday at Mayo Field.

The Gents (3-9-1, 0-4 SCAC) lost their eight-straight match while the Pirates improved to 7-2-3 overall and 2-1-1 in SCAC play. The teams met for the second time this season after Southwestern recorded a 2-0 win over the Gents on Sept. 26 in Georgetown, Texas.

The Pirates scored in the 35th minute as sophomore F Mofe Ariyo scored an unassisted goal for the 1-0 lead and final margin. Southwestern finished with a slight edge in shots (13-10) and the Gents took one more corner kick in the match, finishing with a 7-6 advantage.

Southwestern GK Jack Viles however was able to keep the aggressive Gents off the scoreboard as he played all 90 minutes and recorded one save. Centenary senior GK Sami Borchalli (Lafayette, La.) went the distance as well and made five saves. He entered play ranked in the top 10 in the conference in five different statistical categories.

Junior MF Jaron Petreas (Denton, Texas) entered the match tied for sixth in the SCAC in shots with 26 and led the way with three on Friday. The Gents, despite Friday's loss are an impressive 14-7-3 in their last 24 home matches and are 3-3 this season.

The Gents will face the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs on Sunday, Oct. 17 at Noon and finally Colorado College on Friday, Oct. 22 for their final home match of the regular season on Senior Night at 7 p.m.
