Ladies Hammer Hendrix In DH Sweep

Conway, Ark. – The Centenary softball team swept the Hendrix College Warriors in a non-conference doubleheader in convincing fashion on Saturday, winning game one by a score of 11-3 and finishing off the hosts in game two, 15-5, at Warrior Softball Field.

The Ladies (2-6) took out their frustrations on the Warriors (2-4) as they snapped a six-game losing streak to start the season. Centenary blistered Hendrix for 26 runs and 23 hits in the two games.

The Ladies scored a season-high 11 runs and banged out 10 hits, their second-most of the young season. Centenary played error-free ball, drew three walks, stole five bases, only struck out once, and left seven on base. Hendrix had eight hits and a whopping six errors while drawing three walks, striking out four times, and leaving eight on base.

Junior P Anna Scarbrock (Alexandria, La.) picked up the win in the circle for the Ladies in relief of starter - sophomore P Riley Myers (Shreveport, La.). Scarbrock went five innings and allowed two runs, both earned, and six hits with no walks and two strikeouts. She faced 21 batters and threw 60 pitches (43 strikes). Myers went two innings and allowed one run, which was earned, and two hits with three walks and two strikeouts. She faced 11 batters and threw 51 pitches – 27 strikes.

Hendrix starter Sadie Lewis took the loss to fall to 1-1 as she allowed six runs, but only one earned run, and seven hits in four innings with a walk and a strikeout. She faced 22 batters and threw 58 pitches – 36 for strikes. Betty Wolfe relieved her and went the final three innings and allowed five runs, none earned, and three hits with two walks and no K's. She faced 17 batters, hitting one, and threw 51 pitches (27 strikes).

The Ladies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as sophomore 2B Catherine Stokes (Natchitoches, La.) reached base on a throwing error by 2B Paizley Vaught that allowed senior RF Mackenzie Cox (Alexandria, La.) to score. Senior 1B Isabelle Dominguez (Newark, Calif.) doubled home Stokes to make it 2-0, and Stokes' two-run single in the second gave the Ladies an early 4-0 lead.

The Warriors, however, scored the next three runs of the game with one in the second and two more in the third to trim the Ladies' lead to 4-3. Senior CF Mallory Stout (Trinity, Texas) delivered a sacrifice fly and Stokes' RBI single scored Cox as the Ladies scored two more in the fourth to extend their lead to 6-3. After two scoreless innings, the Ladies tacked on five insurance runs in the seventh to punctuate the blowout win. The top of the seventh inning featured five runs on three hits with three errors, three stolen bases, two walks, a wild pitch, and two left on base.

Sophomore UT River Boultinghouse (Saint Gabriel, La.) finished 3-4 with an RBI, three runs scored, and a stolen base and Cox and Stokes combined to go 4-8 at the plate with four RBI, four runs scored, and two walks. Cox also stole four bases, matching her single-game career high, and marked a season-high after swiping three on Feb. 9 at Millsaps. Hendrix DP Ashlynn Fowler was 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored, and six Warriors had one hit each.

Game two recap: Centenary 15 Hendrix 5  

The Ladies picked up right where they left off in game two on offense as they scored a season-high 15 runs and nearly matched their season high in hits with 13, one shy of their 14 on Feb. 9 at Millsaps.

Centenary scored five in its first at-bat and added two in the second and two in the third. Hendrix, though, remained close as the Warriors scored two in the bottom of the first and three in the third to make it a 9-5 game after three innings.

Sophomore P Alexis Roach (Pineville, La.) and junior LHP/IF Emma Shepherd (Athens, La.) combined to blank the Warriors over the final four innings and the Ladies added six runs in that span to cruise to the win and complete the doubleheader sweep. Fowler, the DP in game one, came on in relief of starter Emma Salis and was tagged with the loss as she worked three innings and allowed nine runs, two earned, on six hits. She walked three and struck out two and faced 22 batters while throwing 65 pitches (38 strikes).

Salis was hit hard for six earned runs and seven hits in her 3.2 innings of work with six walks and two K's. She faced 23 batters and threw 74 pitches – 35 strikes. Sadie Lewis got the final out of the seventh as the third Hendrix pitcher of the game.

Roach started and received a no-decision as she lasted 2.1 innings and allowed five runs, all earned, and four hits with three walks and one strikeout. She faced 13 batters and threw 47 pitches – 21 for strikes. Shepherd (1-0) got the win in relief as she pitched well, working 4.2 innings and shutting out the Warriors on two hits with two walks and seven K's. She faced 18 batters and threw 78 pitches (48 strikes).

Hendrix had six hits and for errors, putting a cap on a forgettable day in the field as the Warriors committed 10 errors. They walked five times, struck out eight times, and left five on base. The Ladies drew nine walks, only struck out four times, and left 10 on base.

Sophomore 3B Morgan Dawson (Natchitoches, La.) was one of five Ladies to record a multi-hit game as she went 3-5 with two RBI and a run scored, Stokes was 2-4 with an RBI, two runs scored, and a walk, Cox walked four times, scored four runs, and stole two bases to give her six for the day. Sophomore C Jaeden Thrasher (Forney, Texas) went 2-5 with three RBI and scored a run, Dominguez finished 1-3 with three RBI and a run scored, and Stout was 2-3 with an RBI, three runs scored, and two walks. Sophomore DP Emma Crow (Krotz Springs, La.) went 2-2 with two RBI, a walk, and a run scored.

Hendrix was led by SS Rylee Harris and RF Andie Houser as they combined to go 4-7 at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored. Wolfe went 1-3 with two runs scored and a walk and Fowler was 1-3 with an RBI and a run scored.

Centenary returns home next weekend to face Arlington Baptist University in a non-conference DH on Saturday at 2 and 4 p.m. and then Concordia University on Sunday at Noon and 2 p.m.
