Ladies Downed By Trinity On Saturday
The Centenary women's basketball team was down by the Trinity University Tigers by a score of 89-54 on Saturday afternoon in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest inside the Bell Center.
San Antonio, Texas – The Centenary women's basketball team was down by the Trinity University Tigers by a score of 89-54 on Saturday afternoon in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest inside the Bell Center.
The Ladies (2-16, 1-9 SCAC) have lost seven games in a row and fell to 1-8 on the road this season. The Tigers improved to 12-7 overall and 8-2 in SCAC play with the win and are now 5-5 at home this season.
Centenary shot 38.9 % (21-54) for the game from the floor, 3-10 (30 %) from beyond the arc, and 60 % (9-15) from the free-throw line while Trinity was 29-62 from the field for 46.8 %, 11-30 from beyond the arc for 36.7 %, and a strong 20-23 at the FT line for 87 %. The Tigers edged the Ladies inside, winning the battle of points in the paint 32-28 and just ahead of them in rebounding, 36-34.
The Ladies turned the ball over 27 times which led to 43 Trinity points, and the Tigers turned it over 16 times which led to 13 points for Centenary. The Ladies had 10 second-chance points to the Tigers' eight, Trinity finished with a 17-8 advantage in fast break points, and Trinity's bench outscored Centenary's 28-12. The Ladies finished with 11 steals and eight assists while the Tigers tallied 23 assists, 15 steals, and one blocked shot.
Trinity led 24-20 after the first quarter and outscored Centenary 19-11 in the second to hold a 43-31 halftime lead. The Tigers were able to put some distance between themselves and the Ladies after a 21-10 third quarter and outscored them 25-13 in the final 10 minutes to finish off the dominating win.
Freshman F Shyanne Phillips (Leesville, La.) led all scorers with 24 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for her eighth double-double and scored in double figures for the ninth time. She was 10-18 from the floor and 4-6 at the FT line in 34 minutes. Phillips has reached double figures in six of her last eight games and had a double-double for the second-straight day after posting 17 points and 16 rebounds against Schreiner on Friday.
Junior F Layla Powell (Fort Worth, Texas) scored eight points in 35 minutes with three steals, an assist, and a rebound on 2-7 shooting. She hit a pair of treys in six attempts and was 2-6 at the FT line. Junior G Savannah Stowers (Waller, Texas) scored a season-high eight points in 17 minutes with two rebounds as she was 2-7 from the floor with one trey and went 3-3 at the FT line. Freshman G Nevaeh Rivera (Rosepine, La.) had six points in 32 minutes on 3-8 shooting with a season-high tying six steals, five assists, and two rebounds. Freshman F Anaya Yunusah (New Orleans, La.) had four points and five rebounds in just nine minutes on 2-3 shooting, freshman F Laijah Rockward (Houma, La.) had two points, four rebounds, two steals, and one assist in 26 minutes, and freshman F Alisha Green (Lafayette, La.) had two points and a rebound in 24 minutes.
Josie Napoli led Trinity with 18 points, Kylie Minter was right behind her with 17, and Bailey Timmons joined them in double figures with 16. Ivory Scott and Livy Sauvageau each scored seven points off the bench, and Natalie Greenwood scored six with a team-high nine rebounds.
The Ladies will return home and play their next four games, all in SCAC play, in the Gold Dome. Centenary faces Concordia University and McMurry University next weekend and then Colorado College and the University of St. Thomas the weekend of Feb. 14-16.
