
Ladies Drop Contest To Millsaps 81-59
The Centenary women's basketball team dropped its final game of the Belhaven University Classic by a score of 81-59 to the Millsaps College Majors in a non-conference contest on Saturday inside Rugg Arena at Heidelberg Gymnasium.
Jackson, Miss. - The Centenary women's basketball team dropped its final game of the Belhaven University Classic by a score of 81-59 to the Millsaps College Majors in a non-conference contest on Saturday inside Rugg Arena at Heidelberg Gymnasium.
The Ladies (1-4) return to action at home on Tuesday against Hendrix College at 5:30 pm. The Majors improved to 4-1 on the season with the win.
Millsaps led 23-13 after the first quarter but Centenary edged the Majors 18-17 in the second period to make the score 40-31 at the half. Millsaps, however, outscored Centenary 26-12 in the third period to take a 66-43 lead into the final quarter, which finished 16-15 in favor of the Ladies.
Centenary shot 42.4 % (25-59) from the floor for the game while Millsaps finished 28-63 for 44.4 %. The Ladies were 2-8 from beyond the arc for 25 % and 7-13 at the free-throw line for 53.8 %. The Majors finished 8-25 from 3-point range for 32 % and 17-30 at the FT line for 56.7 %. Millsaps won the rebounding battle, 36-31 and edged Centenary in a close battle in points in the paint, 38-36.
Millsaps also finished just ahead of Centenary in bench points (38-36), second-chance points (14-12), and scored 27 points off of the Ladies' 25 turnovers. Centenary scored 17 points off of Millsaps' 21 TO's and the Majors scored 22 fast break points to the Ladies scored 12.
Freshman F Shyanne Phillips (Leesville, La.) led the Ladies with 12 points and freshman F Anaya Yunusah (New Orleans, La.) joined her in double figures with 10. Freshman G Nevaeh Rivera (Rosepine, La.) and junior F Kyra Stokes (Shreveport, La.) each scored seven. Freshman G Alexis Duhon (Westlake, La.) had five and junior G Amiyah Barrow (Baton Rouge, La.) and freshman F/C Marilynn Guillory (Sulphur, La.) each scored four.
Junior F Layla Powell (Fort Worth, Texas), freshman G Kaysharia Woods (Zachary, La.), sophomore F Natalya Senat (Killeen, Texas), junior G Savannah Stowers (Waller, Texas), and freshman F Jordynn Patton (Orange, Texas) each chipped in two points.
Haley Franklin led all scorers with 16 points and was one of four Millsaps players to reach double figures. Garin Freeman scored 13, Maddy Maw had 12, and Elyse Warren scored 10. Whitney Novak scored eight, Tia Anderson had seven and Anaya Lewis and Emi Adams each scored four. Rachel Pflum, Taylor Frank, Lexus Keyes, and Mya Richardson combined to score seven points. Franklin added eight rebounds in 28 minutes with a game-high nine assists and four steals. She finished 6-7 from the floor and 4-6 at the FT line.
Millsaps finished with 24 assists, 13 steals and four blocked shots. Adams had five assists, Freeman had three, and Maw had a pair. Pflum blocked two shots, Franklin and Adams each had four steals, and Freeman had two. Centenary finished with 14 assists, 14 steals, and four blocked shots.
Phillips finished 6-11 from the floor in 18 minutes with five rebounds and a steal, Yunusah was 4-9 from the floor and 2-2 at the FT line in 24 minutes with six boards and a steal, and Rivera was 3-10 from the floor and 1-2 beyond the arc in 38 minutes with six assists, five rebounds, four steals, and a blocked shot. Stokes played 22 minutes and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds with two blocked shots and a steal and Duhon played 14 minutes and grabbed one rebound. Powell played 28 minutes and was 2-4 at the FT line with four steals, three assists, and a rebound and Barrow played 18 minutes and had three assists and one rebound.
The Ladies return to action on Tuesday at home to face the Hendrix College Warriors in a non-conference contest set for 5:30 p.m.
